Australia’s successful title bid was buoyed by the consistent performances of keeper-batter Beth Mooney who was adjudged the player of the tournament after the final against England at Lord’s on Sunday.
Mooney was crucial to Australia’s unbeaten run in the tournament, scoring 238 runs in seven innings at an average of 47.60.
This included three fifty-plus scores, including an unbeaten 61 against West Indies in the semifinal and 64 against England in the final.
“This has been on the calendar for a little while for us. So, it’s just nice to be part of the squad first and foremost and have a role to play, opening the batting and wicketkeeping. So, yeah, just pumped to be here. There’s been a lot of evolution in this group in the last 12 months, and a lot of growth and some fun times as well. So, really nice that we’ve capped it off with this today,” Mooney said after the final. ‘
Her run in the tournament was not entirely smooth, fitness wise at least, with the Aussie veteran dealing with a sore back after a long bus ride to Southampton which forced her to hand over the keeping gloves to Georgia Voll. Against Pakistan, she dislocated her finger and got hit on the affected hand multiple times, but soldiered through and kept valiantly for the entirety of the game.
“I mentioned we’ve got a lot of support on the sideline. Our coaching staff and support staff are amazing. Had a couple of niggles along the way, but we’ve managed to, you know, have a full squad to pick from in a big game. And I think that, you know, we can’t shy away from how important that is. So, it’s a great group to travel with. We’ve been on the road for five and a half weeks, and, you know, plenty of people have come over from halfway across the world to watch the finals, some a couple of days ago, some a few weeks ago. So, we’ve felt the love and felt the support here in England,” she added.
