Ryan Garner’s Southampton dream comes true as he fulfils his destiny against Michael Magnesi

SOUTHAMPTON, England – Ryan Garner had manifested and dreamed of a night like this.

The 28-year-old fended off the brave challenge of Italy’s Michael Magnesi to win a unanimous decision and earn the WBC’s interim super featherweight title to put him at the front of the queue to face gifted Texan O’Shaquie Foster.

On the pitch, beneath a canopy as the cool night air swirled around the estimated crowd of some 11,500 fans and not long after the sun had gone down, Garner’s hand was raised after 12 quite pulsating rounds.

This is the St Mary’s pitch where he has seen his hometown team Southampton FC – promoted, relegated and this year implicated in a spying scandal.

That no doubt hurt the promotion.

The feel-good factor, with the club pushing for promotion to the Premier League and set to compete in the play-off final in Wembley, was obliterated when the team was unceremoniously ejected from the final just two days before, and with the Saints fans already having sold out their allocation at Wembley Stadium.

The positive momentum was cut and the club’s positivity drifted to a siege mentality and the club did not push this event as much as they surely would have as they had more pressing concerns.

Instead of allowing Garner to ride in on a tidal wave of a buoyant and recently-promoted hype, he walked to the ring with soccer fans around the country knowing he was fighting at the home ground of a team that was axed from the richest game in club soccer for spying on their opponents in order to get a tactical advantage.

But none of that mattered tonight and, in many ways, it made victory all the sweeter for both Garner and the fans who have endured a tumultuous few weeks.

Garner was given a blistering ovation by his supporters and British Boxing Board of Control general secretary, Robert Smith, nodded to me: “It’s some atmosphere.”

And that continued into the first round, with the fighters setting the tone and letting their hands go at a terrific pace and with an air of recklessness about them both.

Garner stood between the first and second rounds but came out for the second and immediately walked onto a left hook. But they soon resumed trading on even terms. Garner’s left hook to the body came into play and was becoming a feature of his attacks and a right-hand, left hook drew a respectful nod from the Italian and the Southampton man cracked Magnesi with two left hooks with the visitor backed up on the ropes near the end of the second.

Again, Garner stood between rounds, looking poised and focused, but the fast pace carried on into the third and the crowd roared as Garner trapped Magnesi on the ropes and they fought fire with fire, blazing away with both hands to the bell.

In the fourth, Garner turned his man on the ropes and landed two right hands but Magnesi was proving to be a decent operator with his back to the strands and he even forced Garner back a few steps near the round’s end.

Garner grabbed Magnesi’s attention with a good right to open the fifth and the Southampton man moved into capitalise, raining in more shots and more right hands that forced the Italian to momentarily hold once, then twice, signs that the chaotic pace of the fight was starting to take effect, although Garner did collect a verbal warning for the referee for what seemed to be coming in headfirst.

Magnesi landed a chopping right in the sixth and the referee paused the action – seemingly unnecessarily – presumably to tell them to tidy up their work. He didn’t need to get involved; it was enthralling stuff.

A trio of bodyshots from Garner found their way to their intended target in Round 7 and there were signs, now, that the pace might be getting to the Italian, who was looking more wayward with his shots and frequently beaten to the punch.

Magnesi picked up a warning for hitting behind the head in the eighth and promoter Frank Warren, who has been with Garner since the start of his pro career, was living and breathing every punch.

Garner came out crashing and bashing in the ninth and began landing authoritative punches with regularity. He strung poisonous shots together and had the visitor on woozy legs and the referee closely looking on. It was a largely bleak and damaging round for the man from Lazio, and even a right hand at the end couldn’t snap Garner’s enthusiasm. It had been a torrid round for him and it must have felt like he’d spent the best part of three minutes in a spin-dryer.

It looked like Garner was prepared to walk through anything to fulfil his dream tonight.

But Magnesi was not short on courage. He steadied the ship in the 10th and 11th rounds although he was surely adrift on the scorecards.

The fighters embraced before the bell to open the final round and, as the crowd sang, “Ryan Garner, he’s one of our own,” Garner finally took his foot off the pedal, boxed a little more, and moved his way to the bell.

Garner celebrated when it sounded but so, too, did Magnesi – surely only to muddy the waters – and Garner and his coach, Wayne Batten, shared a tearful exchange before the scorecards were issued. This had been their shared dream and had been more than a decade in the making.

Now, on June 20, 2026, it had come through.

No shortcuts, no controversies. Just hard work, commitment and belief in one another.

If there had been a roof on St Mary’s Stadium, it would have blown off when Garner was announced as the winner by scores of 116-112, 118-110, and 119-111.
