A tragic incident at a Mexican independent wrestling event has led to the death of referee Gerardo Germán Pineda, known professionally as El Búho. Wrestler El Hijo de Fishman has now been arrested.
According to local reports, Fishman was facing Máscara Sagrada NG in the main event during a wrestling show at the Centro Deportivo Cultural 11 de Julio in Mineral de la Reforma in the early hours of Wednesday, October 7. After the match, the wrestler reportedly returned to the ring. He then delivered a piledriver, known in Mexico as a martinete, to referee Pineda.
Pineda reportedly could not get back to his feet after taking the move. The show was stopped, and medical officials were called. When paramedics arrived, Pineda was reportedly found without vital signs and was later pronounced dead.
Hijo de Fishman was arrested after a referee died during a wrestling match
Reports state that the piledriver was allegedly delivered without Pineda’s consent. Fishman was arrested in Hidalgo, Mexico, after the incident and is facing a manslaughter charge.
The incident reportedly happened after the scheduled match between Fishman and Máscara Sagrada NG had ended. The exact circumstances remains under investigation. Authorities will determine what happened and who is legally responsible for Pineda’s death.
Pineda worked as a referee under the name El Búho and was part of Mexico’s independent wrestling scene.
El Patron Lucha Libre issues statement
El Patrón Espectáculos, the promotion behind the event, has addressed the tragedy. The company confirmed that it is providing legal assistance to El Hijo de Fishman while staying in contact with Pineda’s family.
The statement reads (via Fightful Select):
“Given the unfortunate events that occurred during the early hours of this Wednesday, October 7, in Mineral de la Reforma, Hidalgo, during a wrestling event with the independent wrestler Hijo de Fishman and the referee Gerardo Germán Pineda, “El Búho”, who unfortunately lost his life, El Patrón Espectáculos informs:
Our company is attentive to the developing situation and has arranged accompaniment and legal assistance for Hijo de Fishman, so that the corresponding process is carried out in accordance with the law and before the competent authorities.
The lawyer and legal representative of the company maintains contact with the family of Mr. Gerardo Germán Pineda, “El Búho”, and with his legal representatives, to handle the case in the best way and guarantee respect for all parties involved.
The legal process is still ongoing, so, out of respect for the authorities and due process, this company will refrain from issuing additional information that could interfere with or prejudice the facts. We ask the fans, media and members of the guild to act with prudence, discretion and respect, and avoid the spread of rumors or unconfirmed information, so as not to hinder the investigations and out of respect for all parties involved and their families.

For now, the circumstances remain under investigation. El Hijo de Fishman remains in custody as authorities handle the case. Meanwhile El Patrón Espectáculos has asked the wrestling community to let the legal process continue without speculation.
