Ruiz briefly owned three unified heavyweight belts. Superfights against Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury waited on the table, only for Ruiz to price himself out with demands that outpaced his drawing power. Instead of capitalizing on his moment, he arrived grossly unprepared for the rematch in Diriyah, then entered a cycle of near-complete abandonment. He managed just four bouts between that night in Saudi Arabia and the opening bell against Knyba. The Knyba loss was the bill finally coming due.

Ruiz returned at 254.3 pounds, his lightest weight in eight years. Training camp videos promised a revived contender, yet a slimmer physique could not mask a hollowed-out fighter. Knyba jabbed, moved, and controlled the center without needing intricate ringcraft. Ruiz followed him with flat feet, refused to cut off the ropes, and ignored the body entirely.

Only when Knyba turned careless did that trademark hand speed briefly flicker. The moment the Polish heavyweight restored distance behind his jab, Ruiz ran out of answers.

Mora went further, calling Ruiz a “shot fighter” who will never contend for a major belt again. That view sounds harsh until you factor in Knyba dropping him in the seventh round and nearly forcing a stoppage. The 117–110 card told the true story of the bout, exposing the two absurd 114–113 scores for the promotional courtesy they were.

Ruiz insists he wants to fight on, but that ambition leads to a dead end. His ceiling no longer includes championship gold. At best, he exists as an expensive gatekeeper, serving as an aging brand name for prospects to harvest on their way up.

The championship window did not close on Ruiz. He left it open for years, wandered away, and returned after everything valuable had already been taken.
