“Right away I called my legal team. I said, ‘Make the fight happen. I want to fight him,’” Lopez told Fight Hub TV. “I would have honestly taken the whole rest of the year off.”

Romero simply smiled, declined to engage, and suddenly a personal rivalry was born. It is weak material from a fighter who previously commanded attention. Teofimo sounds flat, while Romero has abandoned the wild persona that once made his interviews entertaining. Neither man has provided a compelling reason for casual buyers to spend $80.

A capable publicity team needs to step in and give both fighters talking points before every interview. They have legitimate history to exploit, including shared sparring rounds, previous financial favors, and a fractured friendship. Those ingredients can support a WWE-style conflict with defined personas and repeatable themes. Somehow, the promotion discarded every genuine angle in favor of a petty grievance over an ignored punchline.

Teofimo further undermined the sales job by looking past Romero toward the WBC welterweight title. After hearing that Conor Benn plans only one fight at 147 pounds, Lopez immediately wondered if the belt would become vacant.

“Then I got to talk to Mauricio Sulaiman and see how we can make things work,” Lopez said.

That conclusion ignores the obvious business surrounding Benn’s September 12 fight with Ryan Garcia. If the pay-per-view performs as anticipated, a rematch will take priority over an immediate unification with Lopez. Benn would have no reason to surrender the WBC title after beating Garcia. The belt would strengthen his position for the return fight or a WBC-WBO unification against Devin Haney.

Lopez may have unfinished business with Romero as well. A close contest, disputed result, or strong pay-per-view return can lead directly to a second fight. His proposed route to the WBC belt is several steps away and depends on better-paid fighters abandoning more profitable options.

The title talk also distracts from the immediate danger. Lopez is small for the welterweight division, and his time near the top may be brief if he fights only champions and elite contenders. Romero has the size and strength to punish that physical disadvantage, yet neither camp is communicating the threat effectively.

The promotion is charging top dollar while delivering amateur hype. Lopez and Romero need a complete script overhaul before stepping in front of another camera.
