Stuart Maynard speaks out after being sacked by York City, and fans urge the club co-chairs to explain further regarding the decision.
The League Two newboys part company with Maynard just 8 days before their season gets underway.
He guided them to the title with 108 points for the 2025/26 National League season, setting a record in the process, and ended their 10 year stay in non league.

Maynard said in a statement issued via the LMA: “Firstly, I’m overwhelmed by the messages of support I have received on social media over the past few days. I have read and appreciated every single one.
“I feel honoured and privileged to have guided York City back into the EFL, where they rightly belong after 10 years of heartache for the supporters.
“Joao and I couldn’t have achieved any of this success without our dedicated and hard-working management team: Steve, Gary, Olly, Dan, Diego, Sam, Lewis and Kev. Their commitment and belief was incredible.
“Without this special group of players, none of what we achieved would have been possible. Their never-give-up attitude saw us scoring late winners and equalisers. This is what we all saw in the last game of the season. With the chaos happening around us after Rochdale had scored, the skipper calmly told me, ‘We have one more chance, gaffer’, and the rest is history. I am proud of you all for the hard work you put into every training session and game.
“There are also so many unsung heroes who were part of last season’s success: Ed, Ryan, Pete, Wayne, Kevin and so many others, working tirelessly behind the scenes. Adam, Tom and Matthew captured the season’s highs and lows through their photography.
“Our wonderful club secretary, Lisa, also played such a key part in the success of our season, keeping everything organised and running smoothly behind the scenes so we could focus solely on the football.
“Thank you to Julie-Anne and Matt for giving me the opportunity to be the manager of this great club.
“To the fans – thank you for welcoming me into your club and your city. For supporting the management team, for travelling up and down the country supporting the players and supporting your club. I’ll never forget how you always got behind the team, even when the results weren’t going our way. So many memories made, and many club records broken together.
“The last game of the season is one I will probably never experience again as a manager, and to have experienced it with you all will last me a lifetime. The strong bond we built between management, players and you, the supporters, felt like one big family, and we were all in it together on the journey back to the EFL. You are the heartbeat of the club, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”

York City FC Supporters’ Trust (@ycfcst) also issued a statement: “On Tuesday the 28th of July, 2026, the Trust Board met for its scheduled monthly meeting.
“Unsurprisingly, the meeting was dominated by discussion of the recent dismissal of Stuart Maynard.
“We want to update members on where the Trust stands.
“The Trust Board feels the pain of the fans and fully understands the shock felt by many. We are supporters ourselves. This decision landed hard, and we do not underestimate how many of you are struggling to make sense of it.
“The Trust believes that the Football Club needs to provide supporters with further detail to help them understand the reasons behind the decision. A change of this significance, made at this point in the summer, leaves a great many questions unanswered. Having spoken to our representatives on the Club Board, they are of the same opinion, and have shared that view with the other members of the Club Board.
“With the season fast approaching, it would be best to clear the air before the first game. Supporters will be back at the LNER in a matter of days, and they deserve to arrive knowing where they stand. An explanation would not satisfy everyone, but it would go a long way towards rebuilding the trust between the Club and its supporters that a decision like this inevitably strains.
“We would like to make it clear that our representatives on the Club Board, Alastair Smith and James Daniels, have the full and unequivocal support of the Trust Board. As previously stated, Alastair and James were neither consulted nor informed in advance of the decision to dismiss Stuart Maynard. They continue to represent supporters’ interests diligently and in good faith, and they do so with our complete confidence.
“YCST will continue to work with York City FC to make sure the supporters’ voice is heard, and we will update members as soon as we have more to share.”
