Benn was almost perfect promotional material. He was exciting, aggressive and carried the name of his famous father, Nigel Benn. That combination made him a license to print money in Britain. What he lacked was the defensive ability, composure and ring intelligence needed against world-class opposition.

Hearn understood the product. Benn received faded names and carefully selected opponents, including Chris Algieri and Samuel Vargas. Chris Eubank Jr. brought a huge family storyline, but those fights took place at middleweight and never proved Benn was an elite welterweight.

Once Benn left Matchroom for Zuffa Boxing, the protection disappeared. Ryan Garcia was taller, faster, more accurate, and carried the kind of explosive power Benn had been kept away from for most of his career. Two rounds were enough to tear down years of careful construction.

Some will argue Hearn would never have approved Garcia as Benn’s opponent. It is easy to understand that belief. Benn was too valuable in the UK to risk against a sharp counterpuncher with a devastating left hook and enough speed to catch him charging forward.

Anthony Joshua was Hearn’s masterpiece. Joshua came out of the 2012 Olympics with a disputed gold medal victory over Roberto Cammarelle and was marketed immediately as Britain’s next heavyweight ruler. Matchroom controlled every inch of the climb, using Joshua’s physique, Olympic reputation and knockout power to create the image of an unstoppable champion.

The matchmaking kept him away from experienced punchers until his commercial value had become enormous. Charles Martin supplied a friendly route to a world title. Dominic Breazeale and Eric Molina maintained the aura. Even the aging Wladimir Klitschko nearly wrecked everything before Joshua recovered to stop him.

Andy Ruiz Jr. finally destroyed the illusion in 2019. Oleksandr Usyk later exposed the technical weaknesses that polished promotion and favorable opponents had concealed.

That does not make Benn or Joshua poor fighters. Both reached a level most professionals never touch. It shows the difference between being good and being sold as exceptional.

Hearn did not create their talent. He created the perception that their limitations did not exist. Benn’s collapse against Ryan was another reminder that matchmaking can polish a fighter only until someone dangerous is allowed into the opposite corner.
