Richardson Hitchins agreeing to face Keyshawn Davis at welterweight exposes a massive tactical gamble that could backfire on both men. “We’ve accepted the fight. We’re waiting for a couple of commercial things to come through, so to speak, a date to be set. I told Hitchins, it’s a 50-50 fight. But I said, ‘This is the type of fight that if you take it, it’s worth the risk because of the money we’d be receiving, but also the opportunity of two guys fighting in their prime,’” Connolly said to Brian Custer.

Keyshawn must trap Hitchins on the ropes, rip shots to the ribs, and fight through the inevitable clinches. Stepping into that pocket comes with severe danger. Hitchins excels at leaning on opponents, tying up arms, and forcing resets that drain an attacker’s stamina. Keyshawn cannot afford to reset every time Hitchins grabs him.
The jump to 147 pounds favors Hitchins physically. Keyshawn built his career down at lightweight, while Hitchins carries natural length and leverage that will look massive inside the ring. Keyshawn will not overpower Hitchins with size. He has to take punches to land his own, risking exhaustion against a rangy spoiler who knows how to make opponents miss.
Placing this fight on a massive Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua stadium event or a David Benavidez vs. Michal Cieslak bill is the only way promoters can afford both purses. Neither man draws enough single ticket buyers to headline on their own. Once the money is guaranteed, Keyshawn must decide if he truly has the engine to chase Hitchins down.
