Central defenders are a big topic in the Premier League this summer. Chelsea and Liverpool are both searching for new starting options, while Tottenham are potentially looking for two of them.
We know that Chelsea want to target young players, and they’ve also changed tack to target players with Premier League experience, and that reduces the field even further. One name that fits both categories is Maxime Esteve, one of the potential bargains from relegated clubs.
Maxime Esteve a temptingly priced defender option for Chelsea

Burnley defender Esteve is still just 23, and more than good enough to remain a Premier League player. Liverpool and Chelsea are both cited as interested parties in a report from CaughtOffside today.
It’s hard to put a precise price on the former Montpellier man, but given his team have gone down we’d suspect €30m would come close to getting a deal done, as long as you avoid a bidding war with Liverpool or Spurs.
It will be very interesting to see the moves all these top teams make defensively and who ends up where. We hope Xabi Alonso is somewhere right now watching Esteve clips.
In other news…
Chelsea are willing to listen to offers for Alejandro Garnacho, which should perhaps not be a surprise given his struggles in his first year at the club.
A rather surprising name has come up as a potential Chelsea target for this summer, a 29 year old Crystal Palace stalwart.
