Chennai Super Kings turned heads last season by pulling off the blockbuster trade for Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals.

It could now be on the verge of another headline-grabbing move, with the five-time champion reportedly exploring a trade with fellow five-time champion Mumbai Indians to acquire Hardik Pandya.

Securing a premier Indian pace-bowling all-rounder could solve one of CSK’s biggest structural deficiencies, giving the Super Kings a balance they have not enjoyed since Dwayne Bravo’s exit.

Such a move, however, would almost certainly require sacrificing Shivam Dube, their primary middle-order enforcer, in one of two rumoured trade scenarios.

If the first possibility were to materialise, Hardik could arrive in exchange for Dube and promising youngster Ayush Mhatre. While Mhatre is regarded as a key top-order prospect, CSK managed to stay afloat without him last season after a hamstring injury brought his campaign to a premature end.

Parting ways with Dube, however, would significantly reshape how CSK approaches the middle overs.

Dube’s specialised role as a destroyer of spin is incredibly difficult to replicate. Hardik, however, could offset that loss by providing acceleration against pace at the death while also guaranteeing four overs of reliable seam bowling.

His all-round ability could also allow skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad to treat the Impact Player as a tactical luxury rather than a necessity. When batting, Sarfaraz Khan could be introduced to compensate for Dube’s absence against spin. While bowling, a specialist bowler, such as Rahul Chahar, could strengthen the attack without shortening the batting line-up.

The second speculated trade, Hardik for Dube and Dewald Brevis, presents an even more intriguing strategic shift.

Sacrificing Brevis would mean losing a high-ceiling overseas finisher, but the theoretical return could significantly enhance CSK’s lineup flexibility.

By trading away one Indian and one overseas player for a single premium Indian all-rounder, CSK would effectively free up an overseas slot in its starting XII.

That could allow Ruturaj to field an overseas-heavy bowling attack featuring Matt Henry, Nathan Ellis and Noor Ahmad together, while still retaining the option of opening with Matthew Short if conditions demand it.

Hardik’s presence would also eliminate the need to compromise between batting depth and an international pace battery, giving CSK far greater tactical freedom than it has enjoyed in recent seasons.

Regardless of which trade package eventually materialises, or whether one does at all, the move would represent more than just the acquisition of a marquee player. It would signal a shift in how the franchise intends to build its squad in the post-MS Dhoni era, prioritising flexibility and all-round balance over specialist roles.

That shift becomes even more significant as the franchise prepares for life after longtime coach Stephen Fleming. With a new head coach set to take charge, and the long-term leadership picture involving Ruturaj, Samson and a potential arrival in Hardik still evolving, CSK could be on the verge of its biggest strategic reset in more than a decade.
