Farke and Leeds aligned over contract discussions

Leeds United and Daniel Farke are “on the same page” when it comes to discussions over a new contract.

That is the view of Leeds managing director Robbie Evans, who has confirmed talks are under way.

Farke led Leeds back to the Premier League in 2025, and then oversaw a 14th-place finish last term.

Leeds have started this campaign brightly. They are unbeaten in the league, taking five points from their three matches so far.

The Whites did suffer their first loss of the season in midweek, as they went down 6-3 to Chelsea in the EFL Cup, and they will look to get back to winning ways when they host Newcastle United on Monday.

Ahead of that clash, Evans told BBC Sport: “As far as the contract discussions themselves, Daniel and his team and I have had really good chats for the past three months and they’re all on the same page.

“Unlike signing him back in 2023 or doing a deadline day deal kind of thing the time pressure is far reduced and so we have a time to get it right as far as what he wants and what we want.

“I don’t feel it’s taking a long time. It just means we’re getting it right and also we have time to get it right and so as long as we’re still operating together as a group, and we’re doing great on that front, I’m not worried.

“The short answer is that he’s done great, we want him to be here long-term and we’re working on it.”

Evans was also pleased with the business Leeds have done this summer. They brought in James Trafford, Tarik Muharemovic, Nico Elvedi and Harry Wilson before making late loan moves for Melvin Bard and Jean-Matteo Bahoya.

“I think last year the phrase was we had a good window and a bad deadline. I would say this summer was a good window and a good deadline,” Evans said.

“The key for us was we had a couple of top objectives to accomplish and those all got done early in terms of a left-footed centre-half, right winger and goalkeeper. Having signed our top targets in all three of those positions we were able to go and pursue roles around the pitch that gets better and stronger and have time to do so.

“So we’re quite satisfied with the window.”

    PLAYERS TO WATCH

    Leeds United – Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Against no side has Calvert-Lewin scored more Premier League goals (seven) or registered more goal involvements (nine) than he has against Newcastle.

As a team, Leeds have applied the second-most high-intensity pressures in the opposition half (528) in the Premier League this season, with Calvert-Lewin (134) behind only Hull City’s Oli McBurnie (164) among players in this regard.

    Newcastle United – Harvey Barnes

Barnes netted a stunner in Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last week.

The winger has scored eight goals in his last nine league appearances against Leeds, his most against any opponent in his league career.

Seven of those goals have come in the Premier League; only Alan Shearer (20), Thierry Henry (10), Teddy Sheringham (nine), and Mohamed Salah (nine) have netted more against Leeds in the competition.

    MATCH PREDICTION: LEEDS UNITED WIN

Leeds are winless in six Premier League games against Newcastle (D4 L2) since a 2-1 victory at St. James’ Park in January 2021.

Newcastle have only lost one of their last eight Premier League visits to Leeds (W4 D3), a 5-2 defeat at Elland Road in December 2020.

However, Leeds have lost just one of their last 12 Premier League games (W5 D6) and are unbeaten so far this season. Only in 1995-96, 1998-99 and 2001-02 have they avoided defeat in each of their first four in the competition.

Only three teams have had fewer shots on target than Newcastle in the Premier League this season (eight), though they have scored six goals from these. The Magpies are overperforming their expected goals more than any other side across the first three matchdays (+3 – six goals, 3.0 xG).

Indeed, Newcastle have faced more shots than any other side in the Premier League this season (61), averaging 20.3 per game. No side has ever faced 20+ shots per game across a full campaign on record (since 2003-04).

    OPTA WIN PROBABILITY

    Leeds – 42.7%

    Draw – 25.4%

    Newcastle – 31.9%
