Luke Gallows has recalled the bizarre circumstances that saw him pulled from WWE developmental at just 22 years old to defeat Kane on pay-per-view.
Gallows discussed the memorable chapter of his early career during an appearance on The Wrestling Classic. While reflecting on the angle, Gallows admitted that he still gets asked about the storyline despite the negative reception it received from fans.
“I get asked about that, too. But that’s such a weird one, too, because people have this memory of it, and most didn’t like it. Obviously, I didn’t love it either, but, like, I was 22 years old,” Gallows said.
The former WWE star explained that he was simply attending a developmental class when WWE officials suddenly informed him that he would be portraying Kane on Monday Night Raw.
“I was in developmental, just in class one day. They plucked me out of class and pulled me in there, and they go, ‘You’re gonna go to Monday Night Raw and be the fake Kane.’ I go, ‘I can’t do that.’ And they go, ‘Well, you have to.’ And I go, ‘What? No, I’m not ready to do that,’” Gallows recalled.
Gallows Recalls Wrestling Kane at 22
Imposter Kane ultimately wrestled Kane and defeated him at WWE’s Vengeance 2006 pay-per-view. Gallows admitted that he felt extremely inexperienced at the time, particularly compared to the established star he was working with.
“So, I mean, I wrestled Kane and beat him on a pay-per-view when I was 22 years old. And I felt like I was the greenest guy in developmental, but, I mean, they sent him down there, and I worked on his moves and stuff,” Gallows stated.
The angle lasted approximately five weeks, with Gallows describing the entire experience as a “weird whirlwind.”
Gallows also remembered another aspect of the angle that has remained particularly memorable among fans: his wig.
“Especially the terrible wig on the debut. They gave me, like, Gene Simmons hair instead of, like, [Glenn] Jacobs’ hair. It was very strange,” Gallows said.
Gallows would go on to have a much more prominent career in WWE, TNA and New Japan Pro-Wrestling, becoming a multiple-time tag team champion alongside Karl Anderson. He remains best known to WWE fans as one half of The O.C. alongside Anderson.
