Drake and big-money bets is a tale as old as time. Over the years, the famous rapper has shelled out insane amounts of money, only to miss out and create a reputation for inadvertently cursing your favourite teams.
So, it’s only natural that he was back in the bookies for the World Cup in his home country of Canada.
They’ve endured a solid tournament so far, finishing second in the group stage behind Switzerland and scoring some excellent goals along the way. Stars like Jonathan David have particularly stolen the headlines, scoring a hat-trick against Qatar.
It was enough to set up a Round of 32 tie against South Africa on Sunday. On paper, it was always a draw that Marsch should have been pleased with, but that’s not to say it was ever going to be a routine affair.
Canada looked jaded as South Africa attempted to pull off an underdog victory, and it took until the 92nd minute for Stephen Eustáquio to find the winning goal.
There were plenty of relieved Canadians watching on as Eustáquio found the back of the net, but perhaps none more so than Drake, who very nearly lost out on another big-money bet.

It looked for a moment like the Drake curse was going to strike again, only for Eustáquio to have his say. His late goal won the famous rapper a whopping $1m profit after placing a bet worth $777,000 on Canada to win.
It was very nearly a case of laugh now, cry later for Drake, who will now see his country square off against Netherlands or Morocco in the last 16.
Should Marsch’s side advance, then they will continue to create history. Even at this stage, the last 16 is the furthest they’ve ever reached at a World Cup and the manager himself reiterated that at full-time.
Whether Drake is prepared to risk his winnings to prove that the curse is well and truly over in the next round remains to be seen. He’s certainly not shy to splash the cash. After all, he is sitting on a net worth of between $250m and $400m.
The money that he is spending is not something that Canada will be focused on, however. As insane as it is, they’ll remain hell-bent on creating more history as their home World Cup continues to take twists and turns.
