The news that emerged a couple of weeks ago that Chelsea were looking at Rayo left back Pep Chavarria was unexpected, but given he’s a 28 year old who has spent most of his career in the Spanish second division, it seemed pretty straightforward for the Blues to sign him.
Instead, it’s turned into quite the battle. Our writer Simon Phillips has an update on the club’s thinking over this move.
Lewis Hall and Maxi Araujo back in the frame for Chelsea
Phillips says that Chelsea’s latest bid – for £18m – was rejected by Rayo. Talks have since “stalled.”
The Blues think they’re being taken for a ride and exploited by Rayo, who are reportedly asking for silly money now. That’s meant new options need to be explored – if you’re going to pay £40m for Chavarria, you may as well pay £60m for Maxi Araujo or Lewis Hall seems to be the logic here.
Both of those players have now come back into the frame for the Blues, according to Phillips. Newcastle are doing all they can to keep Hall after being forced into multiple big sales this summer, but a deal at the right price is by no means impossible.
