    Birmingham and Wolves play out thriller including stunning strike and bizarre own goal

    Birmingham and Wolves play out a West Midlands thriller on Sunday afternoon, including a stunning strike and a bizarre own goal.

    In what is the first meeting between the two sides since 2018, Fer Lopez had given Wolverhampton Wanderers the lead after just three minutes.

    Jay Stansfield then levelled for Birmingham on 22 minutes, and oh how badly he needed that, after huge missed chances in recent games.

    Just after the half hour mark, Ladislav Krejci then put Wolves ahead again with powerful header, but then Jackson Tchatchoua aimed too high with a kick going over his own keeper, giving the Blues their equaliser in quite the first half. There was even time for Raul Jimenez to strike the top of the crossbar.

    Any attack Wolves had in the second half was pushed back by Birmingham, who themselves gave it as good as they got.

    On the 87th minute, Wolves with a huge chance to snatch a win, Fer Lopez with a long ball up the pitch and to Adam Armstrong who only needed to slot it past keeper James Beadle, only to instead send it somehow over the bar.

    And then shortly after that, Birmingham then pushed for a winner, getting forward, centre-back Phil Neumann down the right, but a pullback went behind Luis Vazquez.

    Then in the 93rd minute, Vicente had been brought down by Tchatchoua, the resulting free-kick on the edge of the box saved by Jose Sa.

    A bonkers game of football, just what this local derby needed.

    Birmingham’s Chris Davies said, as per Sky Sports:

    “There are mixed feelings because I’m proud of the performance. I thought they gave their all and I’ll always be content with that, but I’m frustrated that we haven’t managed to get the three points.

    “I think there was probably enough in there. It was against a really good side. They obviously had their moments, but I thought we could have won it.

    “They had a chance towards the end as well, to be fair, but we take a point. Again, it was an encouraging performance.

    “You need the three points. Encouraging draws are a good thing, but you need the three points and that’s what we’ve got to keep searching and pushing for.”

    Wolves’ Cesar Peixoto:

    “It is difficult to explain something like [the own goal]. I don’t say anything. We have to stay together, all together. Mistakes happen in games. Today was a mistake, but we have to fight together.

    “It is not because of Jack that we didn’t win. We had [plenty of time] to score a third goal and win the game. We have to play better, but today was very difficult.

    “Birmingham are a difficult team. They play directly, with the first ball and second ball all the time. They are a strong team and win a lot of duels.

    “I think the referee allowed a lot of passes and play to continue, but it is one point for us. It is not what we want, but I am happy with one point.”
