Chelsea are set to sell Alejandro Garnacho to Aston Villa, with a loan to be followed by a permanent move next year.

Today’s news is all about Alejandro Garnacho’s move to Aston Villa, and things are moving fast.

Just a couple of hours after Fabrizio Romano confirmed both sides were in “official talks” over the winger, Ben Jacobs has gone a step further and said that the move is “expected to go through.”

He adds that it’s a loan with a buy obligation, allowing Villa to put back the expenditure to next year’s books.

When the deal to sign Morgan Rogers for a massive £117m became public, there was a lot of speculation about whether there would be a return of favour from Villa, who would sign some players from Chelsea in return. With the Ian Maatsen – Omari Kellyman deal of a couple of years ago, they have some history.

To some, this Garnacho deal is clear evidence of that – but the new UEFA rules about player swaps make it harder for both sides to benefit. Either Villa do genuinely want Garnacho, or the two clubs have already found a useful loophole in the new rules.

Both teams are under UEFA settlements after previous overspending, so must be expecting every transaction between them to be heavily scrutinised.

    In other news…

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Chelsea are in talks with Aston Villa over the signing of Alejandro Garnacho, who only joined the Blues a year ago.

Arsenal are competing with Chelsea to sign John Stones from Manchester City, and it really feels like something that could go either way.
