“You wouldn’t have fought me if you didn’t get all of these concessions,” Williams said during Thursday’s final press conference, streamed by Matchroom Boxing. “Let’s not act like you’re like me, where it’s anybody, anytime. I’m about to take your city over using you. They’re going to call me the Brick City champ after what I do to you.”

Mielnicki admitted Williams provides vital credibility. The 24-year-old fighter sits high in sanctioning body rankings, yet his past foes never tested him against the upper-echelon strength Williams possesses.

“I know that I need a guy like him on my record to get the respect that I deserve,” Mielnicki said. “That’s the reason I took this fight. I know what it’s going to bring out of me on Friday night.”

That honesty gave Williams more ammunition. He has already faced Hamzah Sheeraz and lasted 12 rugged rounds against WBC middleweight champion Carlos Adames. He lost both fights, but neither opponent resembles the fighters Mielnicki defeated while climbing the rankings.

Wins over Kamil Gardzielik, Samuel Nmomah, and Omar Huerta protected Mielnicki from genuine danger. Those matches allowed him to climb the ladder without answering tough questions regarding his inside defense or his reaction to heavy pressure.

Connor Coyle supplied a warning in 2025. His pressure made Mielnicki uncomfortable once the distance closed. Williams brings greater physical strength, a southpaw attack, and an unusual eight-inch reach advantage despite both men being listed at six feet.

That reach gives Williams the option of touching Mielnicki from outside before pressing him toward the ropes. If he controls the center, Mielnicki must show he can score while retreating without becoming trapped in prolonged exchanges.

Williams also enters with a new voice in his corner. Working with Derrick James in Dallas has taken him back to what he called his “Texas style” after six years under Kevin Cunningham. James normally favors controlled pressure, balance, and heavy combinations. The question is whether Williams can apply that approach without becoming reckless and walking into Mielnicki’s counters.

A loss relegates Williams to testing status for up-and-coming talent. Dropping a bout in Newark shatters Mielnicki’s high WBO position, stalling Matchroom’s plans to steer him straight to a title shot.

Williams guaranteed a highlight finish, vowing to quiet the Prudential Center crowd. Mielnicki stayed low-key in his reply.

“Vito Mielnicki comes out with the W,” Mielnicki said.
