Khaleel Majid targets Gavin Gwynne rematch as Manchester headliner

Khaleel Majid is hoping to put the lone loss of his career behind him and has targeted a rematch with Gavin Gwynne.

The two fought a closely-contested thriller in Manchester in May on the undercard of Daniel Dubois’ heavyweight title win over Fabio Wardley.

In the end, Gwynne – who improved to 19-4-2 (5 KOs) – won a majority decision.

“After the fight, I started getting a load of messages on Instagram, actually from Gavin’s fans saying, ‘We thought you won that fight.’ I thought, you know what, why not get the rematch on and settle the score,” Majid told BoxingScene.

“It [the fight] was similar to what I was anticipating. I said from the start with Queensberry, ‘I’m going to beat him at his own game,’ and as the fight went on I could see he didn’t expect it, especially in the 10th round.”

Although Majid’s last three bouts have been on Queensberry bills, he’s been working on one-fight deals.

“And it’s been great,” the Bolton man added. “But whichever show me and Gavin get on, I’m not really fussed, as long as we get on.”

Majid is now 16-1 (4 KOs) and said if they boxed again, he would fight the Welshman the same way.

“I don’t think there’s too much to change,” he added. “I believe I beat him at his own game and it’s something I want to do again. He said he wanted a Gatti and Ward fight and that’s what we would do again. For now, he’s trying to outprice himself, but I think he’s quite deluded at the moment in his value, but when he realises what his value is I’ll happily have the rematch and if it’s up north, the support will be absolutely phenomenal. It will be a sell-out. I believe I can headline it myself.”

Gwynne, however, with the victory might be looking to move on. After two controversial bouts with Cameron Vuong, and having held the European lightweight title, the 36-year-old may seek other opportunities rather than go over old ground.

“I believe in myself, I’m a big name commercially and I’m not taking anything away from [Cameron] Vuong but I don’t believe Vuong was ready for those fights,” Majid added. “But Gavin, I feel like if I was such an easy fight he wouldn’t have celebrated so much when he got the decision and if he believes it’s an easy fight, I’m sure it’s an easy fight to get made.

“It [the loss] was extremely upsetting but honestly, the support I got after the fight, it’s like I won. Everyone wants the rematch, everyone in the venue thought I won, I’m not going to say it was easy because obviously I lost, but I’m here to put it right. It’s a logical fight. I’ve got other options but I’d love to headline it in Manchester.”
