For almost three decades, Watson has told sport stories from across Northern Ireland, fronting coverage of the North West 200 motorcycle road race, senior men’s international football matches, Ulster rugby matches and the Irish Cup final.
He has interviewed the biggest names in sport while also showcasing sporting achievements at grassroots and youth level.
The recipient of two kidney transplants, he has dedicated his spare time to fundraising for a range of charities, including Northern Ireland Kidney Research, Kidney Care UK and the Children’s Kidney Fund NI.
He hosts a range of events every year highlighting the work of the Regional Nephrology and Transplant Service at Belfast City Hospital and also volunteers with Age NI, sharing sport stories with older people across Northern Ireland.
“What means just as much to me is the opportunity this recognition gives me to continue raising awareness of kidney disease and transplantation,” he said.
“Having experienced my own kidney transplant journey, I understand first hand the life-changing impact of organ donation.
“I hope to use this profile to encourage conversations, increase awareness, support fundraising efforts and help others, facing similar challenges, know that there is hope.
“I accept this honour with enormous gratitude and share it with my family, colleagues, the charities I work alongside, and the many people whose generosity and courage inspire me every day.”
A number of others have also been recognised for their service to sport in Northern Ireland as recipients of MBEs.
Ian Bamford, a past winner of the Irish Amateur Open and former Royal Portrush captain, is appointed for his services to amateur golf.
Irish Football Association disability manager Alan Crooks is awarded the honour in recognition for his services to disability football, as is former Downpatrick racecourse manager Richard Lyttle for services to the horse racing industry.
Brian Walsh, former Ireland cricket team manager, is similarly honoured for services to cricket.
