White may already have Benn, but Ryan is the bigger American prize. He brings attention without needing a belt, a carefully selected opponent, or months of promotional work. Millions follow whatever he does, including the mishaps, suspensions and unpredictable interviews.
That does not make Ryan the Face of Boxing, regardless of how often he gives himself that title. It does make him exactly the type of personality White knows how to market.
Zuffa has Shakur, who supplies elite skill but has struggled to turn his talent into mainstream interest. Benn gives the company access to the British audience and brings an aggressive style. Ryan would supply the American celebrity factor that neither man can match.
There is also an obvious reason for White to make his interest public during Ryan–Benn fight week. If Ryan knows another powerful company wants him, his leverage rises when the time comes to negotiate his next deal. Golden Boy Promotions will understand the message just as clearly.
Saturday’s result may not change Zuffa’s interest much. Ryan remains commercially valuable if he loses because his popularity has never depended entirely on winning. Benn must prove he can draw the same attention without Ryan standing across from him.
White described Benn as someone around whom he can build a business. Ryan may be the fighter who gives that business its biggest audience.
