A packed O2 Arena treated Brook like an insurgent who might bridge the gap in size through raw speed. He walked in at 36-0, while Golovkin carried a 35-0 ledger with 32 stoppages into his 17th defense.

The move carried an ugly warning sign. Four months prior, Amir Khan had stepped up from 147 to meet Canelo Alvarez at 155 pounds, banking early rounds with sharp boxing before a single right hand put him to sleep.

Brook stepped onto a nearly identical path. His fast combinations gave Golovkin real trouble in rounds two and three. Golovkin brought crushing power, yet his upright stance and scarce head movement left gaps for Brook to drive uppercuts straight through the middle.

Every ringside judge awarded Brook the second and third rounds. Guido Cavalleri had him sweeping the first three, putting Brook in front 39-37 after four. Craig Metcalfe and Benoit Roussel scored the action even at 38-38.

Those moments provided a rough blueprint for what Daniel Jacobs and Canelo later targeted. Jacobs used that blueprint to make it a close fight, snapping Golovkin’s knockout streak even though he still lost the decision, while Canelo stood his ground in the center of the ring. The vital difference was that Jacobs and Canelo were true middleweights with the mass to trade across 12 full rounds. Brook lacked that physical durability.

The cost arrived in the second round when a heavy Golovkin shot shattered Brook’s right eye socket. Brook later admitted he saw multiple figures of Golovkin as his vision fractured. Golovkin realized his foe was damaged, stopped worrying about incoming fire, and went on the hunt.

The finish produced instant fury in the building. Brook stayed standing, throwing punches from the ropes when Dominic Ingle waved a white towel. Referee Marlon Wright missed the signal initially, permitting several extra blows before waving things off at 1:52 of round five.

Hostile jeers poured down from the stands. Ringside onlookers believed the corner had robbed Brook of his moment. Hospital examinations quickly silenced the complaints, revealing a broken right orbital bone that demanded emergency surgery and metal plating.

Eight months later, Brook suffered the exact same fracture on his left eye against Errol Spence Jr. While it was a separate injury on the other side of his face, the structural punishment from Golovkin had clearly signaled the start of a punishing decline.

Golovkin walked away with his belts, lifting his consecutive knockout streak to 23. Brook earned universal praise, but praise does not fix a broken bone. Ingle throwing that towel was the correct call. Brook had already proved his heart, and his corner ensured he walked out with his vision intact.
