Ornstein denies Liverpool were behind collapse of Chelsea move

Chelsea failed to sign Lamine Camara on Deadline Day – but it seems that was more about Monaco’s issues than any Liverpool interference.

Chelsea’s deal to sign Lamine Camara collapsed in the final hours of deadline day a week ago, leaving the Blues a little short in midfield this season.

There were some conspiracy theories doing the rounds this week that the move had failed because Liverpool had stuck their oar in and told the midfielder they were going to come in for him next summer. It sounds spurious, and David Ornstein was pretty comfortable in shutting it down in his Q and A for the Athletic.

Ornstein doubts truth of Liverpool – Camara conspiracy

Ornstein said he simply “didn’t know” about that story, but then gave his opinion which cast a lot of doubt on there being any truth to it:

“Chelsea’s deal got so close and was only pulled because of the Folarin Balogun situation. I think it’s a bit of a stretch to say Liverpool just rang up Monaco or Camara and said, don’t do it, we’re coming for you. So I doubt that one.”

It all sounds like wishful thinking from Liverpool fans, to us.

    In other news…

Dastan Satpayev has been brought back to Cobham to rehab a hamstring injury from his loan to Burnley – which is a real shame for him.

Chelsea had been linked with interest in Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi, and that could be revived come January according to some.

Xabi Alonso’s press conference yesterday saw him confirm that Chelsea had considered an emergency option for their midfield situation.
