    Newcastle fans taunt Sandro Tonali and Tottenham while Jamie O’Hara has another meltdown at watching Spurs losing another league game.

    Anthony Elanga put the Magpies ahead on 62 minutes before Yoane Wissa doubled their lead with clever finish to give Jaissle his first league game.

    Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi speaking to Sky Sports:

    “I think for 60-65 minutes we played better than Newcastle. We had a chance to score, but we didn’t. After they scored, we lost distances.

    “We had more chances and shot more on goal. We are not a team yet. We have to improve a few things.

    “Forget the result, but I’m not angry. We are working well. We were unlucky today, especially with the result.

    “We are not panicking. I know where we are going. I know what the plan is and what could be the difficult problems. We could find it in our way.

    “I’m sorry to the fans and players for the result, but we have to improve. To change the season like the last two years, it’s impossible to do in 10 days or one transfer window.

    “We have to work hard on the pitch. We have to find the connection between the players because last season, before the end, we were in the Championship. We stayed up together; now we have to be calm.”

    He said, as per the club website:

    “No, I’m disappointed for the result, and I’m sorry for the fans, for the environment, because after two defeats, maybe somebody can think it’s the same story, the same as the last two seasons.

    “I have no doubt it’s not like this. I think I can’t change my opinion after two defeats.

    “I have a big, big confidence in the qualities of my players.

    “At the end, when we become a team, when we improve the connection between the players, when we improve the quality of the play, when we improve the defensive space, the distances between the attackers, defenders, midfielders, when we create a team, this group, with me or with another coach, nothing changes, because they are too good players.

    “I’m sorry for the club, because anyway they are building a great squad, but maybe now we are not ready yet, for many, many reasons.

    “We are not ready yet, for many reasons, but today, I think, until the first goal, we played better than Newcastle.

    “Newcastle is a good team, good coach, good player, good everything, but we created more chances to score, we shot more times, we had the control of the ball more than Newcastle.

    “We suffered too much in two or three situations in the first half, because the distance between the attackers and defenders was too big, too much space, and then after the goal we conceded, I think we lost the confidence.

    “The reaction was not good enough, not the reaction I want to see on the pitch, and I said immediately after the end of the game, the players, because when you are building something new, it’s tough, there are problems, the difference is how you want to find the solution of these problems, and the solution is not to put down the head, but to react, because we had 20 minutes again to score one, two or maybe three goals.”

    Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle said to Sky Sports:

    “It was incredible and I’m really proud.

    “We are really proud as a club, as a coaching staff to see a team on the pitch delivering the match plan at a high level already, but also seeing players fully committed to what we’re doing.

    “This is a good start and a moment to enjoy.

    “We also did well last week against Liverpool, therefore it was a step in the right direction again against a strong opponent with huge signings during the transfer window.

    “This is something we were aware of, but how we handled that challenge was amazing.

    “It’s always the same as a coach, you try to emphasise where you could potentially stress the opponent. You find gaps, you analyse that, and this is what matters today.

    “But in general we try to keep our principles on the pitch independent of the opponent and today it worked two or three times.

    “The DNA of Newcastle United is a good fit to the playing style I like to see, so therefore I already saw in the past some similarities.

    “Now we’ve used the time in the best efficient way and I’m proud to see that working already.”

    Jaissle on Nico Gonzalez:

    “When he has the ball he has good timing – when to deliver in the last line but also when to slow the game down a little and finding time to regenerate our batteries.

    “It was a really good debut.”

    On Yoane Wissa and Anthony Elanga:

    “I don’t take the compliments. I try to just encourage, motivate and support them – not just those two but the whole squad together with my staff.

    “We’re here to deliver these tasks, that’s our job, but I’m really happy to see it.

    “It means a lot. I also said to the lads in the locker room that we can now count on our defensive stability. The clean sheet was a big goal today and we delivered, so I am pretty proud.”

    Jaissle said ahead of deadline day:

    “We are realistic. We have high ambitions and we know what is needed, but the squad is strong.

    “We saw that today, but there are still a couple of days left and we can then talk again.”
