    Newcastle and Liverpool draw, Brighton thrash Villa, Man City come back to beat Bournemouth

    Sunday’s Premier League action saw Newcastle and Liverpool draw, Brighton thrash Villa, and Man City come back to beat Bournemouth.

    Upon his arrival at St James’ Park, Alexander Isak got not the warmest of welcomes should we say as he return to his former club. Newcastle fans booed his every touch and mocked with every chance that went ahead him.

    Then came the emotional scenes with everyone inside the stadium paying tribute to Kevin Keegan, who died in July aged 75.

    The game itself was an entertaining one, 5 minutes in, William Osula slipped the ball to Anthony Elanga to put Newcastle ahead.

    Cody Gakpo got Liverpool’s equaliser on 55 minutes, but shortly after Joe Willock came off the bench, he then got the Magpies back in front.

    Then a very late twist, Lewis Hall with a leg out, Victor Munoz goes down following a clash of knees, and a spot kick is given.

    Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up and sent it beautifully into the top left to snatch a point.

    Liverpool’s Andoni Iraola speaking to Sky Sports:

    “I don’t think we deserve to lose the game today and I value the effort from the players.

    “I haven’t looked at the stats, but I’m sure we will have more chances, more everything.

    “I think we were arriving, probably in the first half, we were not finishing anything.

    “We were having a lot of balls on the edge and we were trying to overplay a little bit. And we had just to shoot, shoot, even the first ball we got it.

    “I think the players coming from the bench gave us energy. I don’t know if they played better, worse, but they gave us energy. And you can feel the way we want to play, everyone is not going to last 90 minutes. So we need this energy from the ones coming from the bench and I think today it happened.”

    Szoboszlai said to Sky Sports:

    “If I am honest, we should have won. But that’s football. You don’t win easy in the Premier League – doesn’t matter who you play against. We have to be aware of that and we need to take care in the next game.”

    Newcastle’s Matthias Jaissle to Sky Sports:

    “Hard luck, I would say. I’m really, really happy with the performance after such a short amount of time. The guys were fighting till the end, they put their heart on the pitch and this is something we said that’s not negotiable. That’s the standard. And together with the crowd, it was, in general, a really good performance. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the full three points.

    “The heads are a little bit down, but they’re also realistic, they know that we had many mini challenges already. There’s a huge transition phase at the moment. But we tried already encouraged them that this is another part where we got some challenges to overcome. Someone was throwing some stones on the way. I need to be careful, not to get fined.

    “It was soft. It was a really soft one, if you give that, then there will be so many penalties in the future. I’m not a fan of that.”

    It was all too easy for the Seagulls, as they hit four goals in the first 31 minutes, with Villa then having Joao Gomes sent off on his debut.

    It took just 8 minutes for Brighton to open the scoring, Pau Torres with a wayward back-pass, with De Cuyper sending his shot towards goal, the ball hitting the post, back off Victor Lindelof and across the line.

    De Cuyper doubled the lead 10 minutes later, getting on the end of Georginio Rutter’s cross. Jack Hinshelwood got a quick fire double to make it 4-0.

    The 40th minute saw Gomes shown a red card after his kick out at Rutter.

    Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, as per Sky Sports: “We started the first 10-15 minutes very well. Then I can’t understand exactly why we lost in 20 minutes all the match and a player.

    “But this is the process we have. We know football is not easy, we know four years working here in Villa we have to work in difficult moments as well. Always we recover a good moment. Always came back, with the situation maybe like we have now.

    “The response on the field in the second half, I’m really happy.

    “The players they didn’t give up, they worked it, showed good commitment and kept going.”

    Aston Villa’s John McGinn to Sky Sports: “We started the game very well. Had the chance to go ahead with Emi [Buendia]. We were the ones to create the chances. But playing at the highest level, when you make a mistake, they happen. The goals we concded were poor, there’s no getting away from that.

    “Going away in the Premier League, we obviously apologise to the supporters, it’s not easy to travel, costs a lot of money, takes a lot of time. And they don’t want to come here and see their team lose by four goals before half-time. But on the flipside, 4-0 down at the Amex with 10 men, we had to stand up in the second half and the squad of players in there, we had a chance to puff our chests out, be men and fight and we did that.

    “We’re obviously angry and disappointed at the result. We set high standards and that’s far away from that. However, there’s a bit of me that’s proud at how we reacted. Today could easily have got away from us and got messy. A lot of pride in the second-half performance. After five games last season, we had one point. Hopefully this season can go the same way as that.”

    Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said: “[What did he like most?] Clean sheet!

    “The first minutes we struggled a little bit. But then more and more we got the control of the game back. We scored some nice goals. The first goal with some luck. But we scored some nice goals that helped our game, the intensity. The red card was a gamechanger but all the goals we scored were 11 v 11.

    “The second half we were quite serious. We had the ball, controlled the game, didn’t give away the ball too easy and created some chances. Quite a mature performance.

    “It’s always helpful to win games. But it was only one game. A good start. Now we have another big challenge ahead of us on Thursday.”

    Enzo Maresca’s first game in charge saw Man City come from behind to beat Bournemouth, Marcus Tavernier with an opener in the 26th minute had the Cherries leading up until the 84th minute when Marc Guehi levelled the scoreline, then Josko Gvardiol grabbed the winner in stoppage time, his goal initially ruled out for offside, but after a VAR check, was given.

    Maresca said, as per Sky Sports:

    On Marc Guehi’s midfield role: “In this moment, it’s a matter to find solutions. To see different things. I know Marc from Palace. I always thought he could be a good midfielder. Sometimes you visualise things and you need to try. Overall, it was a good performance from him. He gives us a solution for the future.”

    On the welcome he received from the home crowd: “It was the perfect day. I was very pleased to watch the banner at the start. And I was pleased to give the fans the joy of the three points. I was quite emotional.”

    On differences from defeat to Arsenal: “I feel in the same position as we were after Arsenal. I know most of the time it’s normal you judge on results. But I don’t see a big difference with one week ago and today.

    “Unfortunately, this is a work in progress. That’s why I’m looking for solutions. We need to prepare the team for the season, but for sure when you win it helps the environment, the team and the fans. We are more happy today.”

    Bournemouth boss Marco Rose said: “We are competitors. We came here to win the first time. We were in a good way to do it. We did many good things. At the end, how the game went, it was quite unlucky to lose that way.

    “We had two situations. One corner kick and one situation where we were too passive. A game does not last 80 minutes, it’s 90 minutes. We have to defend better. Here you need to find the right triggers, which we did really well for a long time.

    “We had some transition situations and scored a really nice goal. It’s about details. We can build on this, it’s a good foundation. But we’ve got no points and we play for points. The plan was good we just struggled in the final minutes.

    “The game is never over here, you have to defend for five or six minutes longer.”
