Rey Mysterio is getting another chance to win WWE gold, even while working as the General Manager of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. The WWE Hall of Famer accepted a challenge from Intercontinental Champion Chad Gable, who put the title on the line on the August 10 episode of WWE RAW.
Mysterio became the first-ever on-screen GM of AAA in May. His position has created a connection between WWE and AAA, allowing Mysterio to continue appearing for WWE while also helping with developments in Mexico.
Chad Gable selects Rey Mysterio for his next Intercontinental Title defense
After Gable defeated Penta at SummerSlam to win his first Intercontinental Championship, he approached Mysterio backstage on this week’s RAW.
Gable praised Mysterio for his work as AAA General Manager and for helping organize the tournament. He then revealed that he wanted to defend his Intercontinental Championship against Mysterio.
Gable called Mysterio “the greatest luchador of all time” and said it would be an honor to put his title on the line against him.
Mysterio may have a busy role in AAA, but he made it clear that he is not finished wrestling. He told Gable that he still has a lot left in him and accepted the challenge.
WWE has not announced the date of the championship match yet. The match will be the second singles encounter between Mysterio and Gable. Their first meeting took place on RAW in October 2022, when Mysterio picked up the win.
But this time, there is much more history between them. Gable’s relationship with Mysterio became complicated when he started using the El Grande Americano character and mocked Lucha Libre traditions.
His actions put him against many respected WWE and AAA luchadores. Eventually, Gable dropped the character and started trying to make things right. After losing his mask in AAA, Gable began showing genuine respect for Lucha Libre and the culture he had previously ridiculed.
That change became even clearer when Gable helped Mysterio during an attack by Rusev and Ethan Page. Mysterio’s mask had been taken during the attack. Gable recovered it and handed it back to Mysterio.
He later apologized to both Mysterio and Penta for his past actions. Mysterio accepted the apology but reminded Gable that there were still other people from his past who deserved to hear one.
Now, Gable is giving Mysterio a chance to challenge for his championship.
