Emmanuel Emegha is going to miss the preseason tour, but will be fit to start the Premier League season according to Nizaar Kinsella.

Chelsea’s preparations for the season ahead went into a new gear this week when the team departed for Australia, where their preseason tour begins.

There were a few expected absences from the group – many first team players are still on holiday after the World Cup, while the likes of Axel Disasi and Marc Guiu have been left at home to work on a move away from the club. But there were some unexpected absences too. Fans quickly noticed that new signing Emmanuel Emegha was not on the list of players heading down under.

It was confirmed that this was due to a hamstring injury picked up in our friendly win over Bromley this week, and today Nizaar Kinsella of the BBC has confirmed that Emegha is “expected back for the start of the Premier League season,” but will “likely miss the overseas preseason tour.”

Emegha to miss big chance to impress

That’s pretty bad news, for Emegha and for Chelsea. This preseason was supposed to be his chance to impress Xabi Alonso and prove he’s the man to be Joao Pedro’s backup.

He now won’t get that chance – and after missing most of last season with various injuries, it’s another worrying negative to add to his file.

    In other news…

Chelsea are going to need to trim their squad more than usual due to a lack of European football, and some data from the BBC shows by just how much.

Josh Acheampong faces an even tougher battle for minutes this season with no European football to take into the equation.
