DAZN announced Monday that it has signed Teofimo Lopez directly to the streaming platform, but the timing of the move may prove just as important as the signing itself. Rather than adding him after one of the biggest victories of his career, DAZN is betting that the former two-division world champion can rebuild his position after losing to Shakur Stevenson last January.
DAZN believes it bought low on one of boxing’s biggest names. Teofimo remains one of the sport’s most recognizable personalities and one of its best self-promoters. That star power has value only if it is backed up by victories inside the ring. His next bout leaves little margin for error when he challenges WBA welterweight champion Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero on August 22 in Las Vegas.
Another defeat would immediately change the outlook surrounding DAZN’s newest signing.
The loss to Shakur damaged Teofimo’s standing among boxing’s elite and made it harder to view him as one of the sport’s premier attractions. A second straight defeat would make it far more difficult for DAZN to market him as one of the faces of its boxing lineup.
That is why the company made this move now instead of waiting until after the Rolly fight. If Teofimo wins a world title at welterweight, his asking price and negotiating leverage likely increase. By signing him before he steps into one of the biggest fights of his career, DAZN is betting that the Shakur defeat was a temporary setback rather than the start of a decline.
It is a bold business decision, but one with significant downside. A victory over Rolly would make DAZN look shrewd for securing Teofimo before his value climbed again. A loss would leave the company promoting a fighter coming off consecutive defeats while trying to convince fans he remains one of boxing’s biggest attractions.
That is the risk DAZN accepted when it signed Teofimo. The company isn’t paying for what he accomplished in the past. It is investing in what it believes he can still become. If that evaluation proves wrong, this signing will be remembered as one of DAZN’s biggest miscalculations. If it proves right, the company may have landed one of boxing’s biggest stars at exactly the right price.
