Fans react to Oxford United being placed under restriction by the EFL ahead of the 2026/27 season, as they prepare for life in League One.

Reports first emerged on the 9th of July, with The Athletic’s Tom Burrows tweeting that he had been told of the U’s being placed under a temporary transfer embargo.

He continued: “The embargo prevents the registration of new players until the issue is resolved.

“Relates to League One’s Salary Cost Management Protocol (SCMP).

“Under the rules, clubs must demonstrate at the start of the season they can fund their planned player expenditure and afford their playing budget.

“#OUFC have not yet been able to provide all of the required funding.”

    Club Statement.

A statement on the club website read:

“Oxford United can confirm that, as they are not currently compliant with EFL Salary Cost Management Protocol (SCMP) regulations, the Club have been placed under a temporary embargo which prevents the registration of new players.

“SCMP, the EFL’s financial control framework specific to League One and League Two clubs, sets limits on the proportion of a club’s turnover and owner funding that can be spent on player-related costs.

“Following relegation from the Championship, and with rule changes removing the staggered approach to equity injections, the Club have been working to align their financial position with the reporting requirements of League One.

“With a commitment from shareholders to increase investment into Oxford United over the coming months, along with measures to reduce overall costs, the Club will be compliant and in a strong position ahead of the January transfer window.

“The Club have an extremely competitive squad already in place and the focus this summer will be on retaining those players that give Aaron Ramsey and his staff the strongest group possible to deliver success on the pitch this season.”

Oxvox published a statement expressing concerns:

“As is often the case, events can arise that require us to put aside some of the projects we are working on to address them. We have an update relating to the re arranged OxVox AGM that was due to be sent out, but we will try to get that to you later today or tomorrow.

“For the last couple of days we have been looking into rumours of an embargo that may have been brought against the club. As with all these incidents we feel it is vital to get the facts before commenting and while we endeavour to get things out quickly, it is even more important for them to be right.

“Having spoken to several sources both inside the club and outside we can confirm that the club will be placed under embargo by the EFL at some point later today or tomorrow. It is our understanding this is for a breach of the Salary Cost Management Protocol and that essentially the owners have failed to provide sufficient proof of funding for planned player budget for the forthcoming season.

“It is our understanding that this embargo will be lifted as soon as the matter is resolved and that there is no fixed term.

“We have often praised the owners and board for their continued funding of our club in difficult circumstances but this news is worrying and unsettling at a time when the new manager needs to be focused solely on recruitment and pre season.

“We have pressed and continue to press the club to release a full statement explaining our situation and what the club and owners are doing to rectify it. OxVox remain determined to improve the communication from the club and this matter demands a quick and full response.

“We are continuing to work hard to bring more details forward and we have managed to pencil in a meeting with our new chairman Dusan Bogdanovic to discuss this and other matters. We will report back in full in the coming days on this meeting and on any other information that comes to light.

“We as supporters are the constant that holds this club together and we are pressing the club in the strongest terms to honour the trust placed in them and to protect our club at this vitally important time.

Fans react to Oxford United being placed under restriction by the EFL ahead of the 2026/27 season…

@_dave1893: To be fair if we keep mills, Tyler, Currie, cumming, brown, branagan then most of us would have taken that as a bloody good window ! The only issue for me would be striker. And if loans count towards not being able to register

@G_Lock75: No transfers until January? WTF!🤬

    @lukesamuellll: Not good enough.

@danishoufc: if that’s it until January then you better not sell anyone. Embarrassing that this keeps happening, shame on those who allowed it to happen

@_BenOUFC: So no more signings till January?

@barrywedge1: The club have taken fans money under false pretenses

@sean_joshua_: This isn’t acceptable. We need action NOW, and shouldn’t be waiting around until January to sign players in the areas we need strengthening. Those who failed to prepare us for the financial ramifications of getting relegated whilst being so spendthrift in January need to go

@Pumpum4870: Great, possibly just ruined our best chance of getting out of this shite league fuck this shit club, was looking forward to this summer , cheers lads just ruined my summer but thank you I can now delete this horrid app ✌️ #oufc

@Ruben_Boodell: Even before the transfer embargo I was thinking we didn’t need to add much as long as we retained. I feel like the club did most of the spending in January with McDonnell, Jeon, emakhu ect. This squad is more than capable of competing at the top of league one #oufc

@Theo_Woollard: Bigger concern is why our owner and shareholders are unable to prove that they can cover costs for this season.. #oufc

@eddwillmot: A complete shambles!! The lack of communication from the club is horrendous. Being run by amateurs, no wonder we have ended up with an inexperienced manager, who would want to come near us in this state!

@ABrown31_v2: “Ahead of January” is a horrific statement to read. To not know your rules and have your ducks in a row is so bad. We looked nailed on for relegation for pretty much the whole of last season, what were we doing? #oufc

@_LucyGH: Well this sounds like an utter shit show! Sorry fans, we’ve got a transfer ban, but don’t worry we’re already competitive with what we’ve got (if they all stay) so wait till January for any new additions – this is going to be a fun season yellows 😳

@heyit5sam2: Absolute circus at board level. The way I read the news this morning is that the embargo could be lifted as soon as we can prove we’re stable financially. Now this statement suggests we can spend in January only? Needs serious clarifications here

@TheYellow_Page: Just have to wonder what is going through Ramsey’s mind right now?! If I was him I’d call it a day with the clowns he has above him #oufc

@Hugo66522088462: What a shit show. So we can’t sign anyone till January???!!!!!!!

@jac0bcrook: In a strong position for JANUARY?

    @AndyD_1987: Absolutely shocking!

@HarryCallaghan_: Suddenly the Prelec and Roosken deals getting done before the season finished make sense. Absolutely shit show sack the whole board. #OUFC

Other than a ‘total fucking car crash’, I’m not entirely sure how else I can describe this…

It’s the kind of thing that puts our football club in dangerous long-term jeopardy…#OUFC https://t.co/lNXoCGDHng pic.twitter.com/dRR3EHZOjj
