Mikaelian has not been removed from the card, and the development does not mean the fight has been canceled. Zuffa is protecting itself in case King files a lawsuit or attempts to stop Mikaelian from fighting through an injunction.

King maintains that he has a binding promotional agreement with Mikaelian. He also claims arrangements were made for the WBC cruiserweight champion to face David Benavidez. Mikaelian has disputed that version, saying he never received formal paperwork for the proposed Benavidez bout before accepting the Opetaia fight.

    Muted Promotion Makes More Sense

The contingency planning may help explain the unusually quiet promotion surrounding Opetaia vs. Mikaelian. Opetaia has done little to build the fight publicly beyond posting the words “fight week” on social media, despite being positioned as one of the leading names on Zuffa’s boxing roster.

Aggressively advertising Mikaelian carries some risk if Zuffa is unsure that he will remain on the card. Still, keeping the matchup quiet makes it harder to generate interest in what is supposed to be a major cruiserweight fight.

Opetaia vs. Mikaelian has significance because it brings together the Ring champion and the WBC titleholder, although the WBC has not clarified how it will handle Mikaelian proceeding with the Zuffa bout instead of facing Benavidez.

King May Be Seeking a Deal

King has more than one possible objective. He may try to stop Mikaelian from fighting through an injunction, but the threat of legal action may also give him leverage to get a financial settlement from Zuffa.

An enforceable promotional agreement or signed contract involving Mikaelian and Benavidez would force Zuffa to decide if keeping the WBC champion is worth an expensive court fight. Preparing an alternative protects the company while strengthening its hand in any settlement talks.

The timing favors King. A legal filing close to September 12 would place Zuffa under pressure because the company has little time to find and promote a substitute capable of preserving the co-main event.

Replacing Mikaelian with an available cruiserweight would not be difficult. Finding someone who preserves the value of the co-main event would be far harder.

Most contenders would arrive with little preparation time and none of Mikaelian’s championship status. Opetaia would likely be left in a heavily favored fight, weakening a card already relying on Garcia vs. Benn to carry most of the attention.

    Opetaia Risks Another Mismatch

The greater sporting cost belongs to Opetaia. Mikaelian gives him a recognized champion and an opponent with enough status to move his career forward. Someone brought in less than three weeks before the card would probably be filling the slot rather than presenting the same test.

That outcome would be a serious blow to Opetaia’s visibility. He may be the leading cruiserweight in boxing, but his public profile remains limited. A regional-level replacement brought in with two weeks’ preparation would turn a valuable Paramount+ co-feature into another likely blowout.

Opetaia is already 31, and the closest he has come to facing an elite-level opponent during his 11-year professional career was his two fights with Mairis Briedis. The Latvian was in his late 30s for both bouts. Those wins established Opetaia at cruiserweight, but he cannot continue spending his prime years against short-notice substitutes and opponents who bring little attention.

Mainstream viewers arriving for Garcia vs. Benn would learn little from watching Opetaia overwhelm an underprepared opponent. Instead of building his name, the performance would reinforce his existing promotional issue: impressive victories in fights that generate little anticipation and leave no lasting impression.

The situation also exposes the difficulty Zuffa faces outside its controlled UFC structure. Boxing involves rival promoters, separate contracts, and sanctioning organizations with competing interests. Contacting matchmakers is sensible preparation, but it shows that Zuffa cannot simply announce a fight and assume every outside dispute will disappear.
