Going into this summer, there were two pieces of received wisdom about Chelsea’s central defender situation.
Firstly: the Blues need to sell several of their current options. Secondly: the Blues need to buy at least one elite option.
Well, a couple of months into the summer, and nothing has happened on either front. Our writer Simon Phillips had an update on the situation on his Substack.
Chelsea may be forced to let Acheampong go despite months of denials

Most worryingly, Phillips says that Josh Acheampong, our talented young academy option, is now “frustrated with his lack of game time” after a couple of seasons where he’s been consistently overlooked.
Chelsea “do not want to sell him” but may be forced to if Acheampong starts pushing to go.
“There is a sense that ‘his people’ are causing some issues, so [Chelsea] could sanction a sale if a big offer comes in and the player really pushed to go.”
We’ve spent the last 18 months being briefed consistently about how much Chelsea rate Acheampong – if they end up letting him go now, that would be a bitter disappointment.
In other news…
We’re now a week into Chelsea’s preseason, and the first reports about how the players are responding to it are coming out. It all sounds very positive, which isn’t surprising at all.
There are big questions in goal for Chelsea, and one thing the Blues want to do is sign an experienced player who can be third choice. One option has already rejected them
