Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has confirmed that a bid has been submitted for Gustavo Hamer by one of the midfielder’s former clubs.

Hamer joined the Blades from Coventry City back in 2023, though it has emerged that Frank Lampard is keen to bring the 29-year-old back to the club for a second stint.

During his time with Coventry, Hamer made 132 appearances across all competitions, scoring 19 goals and providing 22 assists, which earned him his move to Sheffield United.

Hamer put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Blades three years ago for a reported £15m fee, but was unable to help them avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Since then, Wilder’s side have spent two seasons in the Championship, losing 2-1 to Sunderland in the 2024-25 play-off final before finishing 13th in the second tier last term.

And with Coventry now preparing for their first season in the Premier League since 2000-01, Wilder revealed Hamer was of interest to an unnamed club, but hinted that it was the Sky Blues who were the ones strongly considering a move.

“I’m transparent,” Wilder said in a news conference. “There has been a bid in for Gus, and that is being discussed by the owners.

“Our policy as a football club is that we don’t like players leaving on a free transfer, especially when we have paid a decent fee.

“I know this was a decent fee when we were in the Premier League.

“They are our thoughts as a club, and then there’s Gus’ point of view. It’s about getting the right fee that is relevant to what we feel he is worth.

“Are we going to get back the money we paid for him? No, because he’s in the last year of his deal. But we’re not going to get rolled over.”

Since joining Sheffield United, no player has played more games (123), scored more goals (22) and registered more assists (27) for the Blades than Hamer in all competitions.

Hamer also ranks at the top for chances created (229) in that time, while in 2025-26, his 19 goal involvements (seven goals, 12 assists) were at least three more than any other player in Wilder’s squad, with Callum O’Hare in second on 16.

“The decision will have an input from me, but it’s a decision for the board whether to accept the offer or not,” Wilder continued on the situation.

“Gus is ambitious, and there’s been a bid made by one of his former clubs where the owner really likes him, the manager speaking to him this week really likes him, and the supporters really like him.

“He has the opportunity to have a big increase on his salary, the length of the contract, and go to a club where he’s really highly thought of.

“If he wanted to stay here, then we would have engaged in contract negotiations, but that hasn’t been the case.”

It has been reported that Sheffield United have rejected an initial bid for Hamer, as the asking price was not met, though the clubs remain in contact over a potential move.
