We have been starved of information about the hamstring injury which Estevao Willian picked up against Manchester United towards the end of the season.
Chelsea told us little – getting any information from Calum McFarlane at any point was a thankless task. Finally we have an update, and it might be our first to come from a pentecostal church. It was there, in his hometown of Franca in Brazil, where the winger spoke publicly about the issue for the first time.
Estevao on his miracle recovery and dodging surgery
He revealed that his “grade four” hamstring tear was so bad the Chelsea doctors wanted him to have surgery – he even referenced one of the Chelsea owners telling him to have it.
But a second scan, two weeks later, showed a miracle healing (given the context, we think he’s partly putting that down to the Lord or perhaps the power or prayer).
All in all it seems like the injury was worse than we ever could have feared, but the recovery is going better than anyone thought possible.
We just hope he hasn’t lost a step of pace or explosiveness, a crucial part of his game as a winger.
