West Ham were booed off after being on the end of a 2-1 defeat to Charlton and Valentin Castellanos missing a late penalty.

The Hammers, who went into this season as the favourites to win the title, remain winless in the league after two games.

The Addicks meanwhile are unbeaten, with Lloyd Jones, on the end of Sonny Carey’s throw, chested it down and sent it into the bottom-right corner with an overhead kick after just 7 minutes.

Charlton then doubled their lead on 56 minutes, Miles Leaburn making his way past Konstantinos Mavropanos, Tyreece Campbell picked it up and comfortably slotted it into the net.

Joel Piroe got one back for West Ham with around 15 minutes remaining, the hosts’ were dominant in possession, a spot kick was awarded on the 93rd minute when Conor Coventry was deemed to have handled the ball, Castellanos stepped up and sent his shot against the post.

    SHORTENED HIGHLIGHTS:

    EXTENDED HIGHLIGHTS:

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo said, as per Sky Sports:

“We trust Taty to take the penalties. I don’t know (if he will take the next one), we will have to decide.

“We started badly again. We got punished from a situation where we know Charlton create problems. It became much harder but we still created a lot of situations but were not accurate enough in the boxes. Football is this – to be accurate in the offensive box and we have to defend much better.

“We had a lot of possession and tried to break them, which is not easy. We should have finished better.

“Of course, I feel under pressure. West Ham is pressure every day – it is a big club. You see that with 62,000 fans in the stands and we let them down. This is the more disappointing feeling.

“The boys tried until the end. We are going to repeat, repeat and repeat in training, in the final third, to create situations that allow us to score. We will keep the belief and the process.”

Jarrod Bowen said to West Ham TV: “It’s disappointing as the goals that we conceded I thought were really, really poor on our behalf.

“And when we’re 2-0 down, we’re always trying to find two goals, which we nearly did.

“We dug in there, but we’ve got to do more to not concede those goals to give us a better chance of winning the game, ultimately.

“We knew what kind of game plan it was going to be [from Charlton]. We knew they were going to have a lot behind the ball and defend and try and hit us on the counter attack and obviously set-pieces and long throws are really important [for them].

“Like I said, we didn’t deal with it well enough to keep the ball out the back of our net to give us that opportunity to go on and have our chances and score the goals, but ultimately it was not enough.”

See more of what he had to say below…

Charlton’s Nathan Jones said, as per Sky Sports:

“We can’t get carried away because this is the norm now. It isn’t a cup game or a one-off match – this is the league.

“We had to be very organised and good tactically. First half we were excellent, countered really well and probably could have created a little more with better decisions in the final third. But I’m so proud how they have gone about their work and defended the box.

“Do we demand from Lloyd Jones to score more goals? Yeah, because in both boxes he is one of, if not the best, for first contacts in the Championship.

“And that is exactly what we want from Tyreece and what we work on. We have been demanding those outcomes when he gets into those positions.

“Arthur Okonkwo was outstanding. It’s wonderful to work with him. He has shown real desire to join the football club.”

Here’s how social media users reacted with West Ham booed off after defeat to Charlton and Castellanos missing a late penalty…

@darrensharp73: How many people said West Ham would walk the league?

@cockneyboywhu: Taty is the worts striker we’ve ever had. Why the fuck is Bowen not taking the pens.

@WestHamJoshV: Last time we were in The Championship, Allardyce purposely bought in squad players and options off the bench like Abdoulaye Faye, John Carew, Bouba Diop. Battle hardened players for this league. West Ham do not have a single type of player with the fight needed for this league.

@j5_oj: Should’ve let Engels hit the penalty lads

@ryan60990044: Why the fuck did taty take that bowen all day long should be on that

@BerksHammer: This team is not getting promoted playing like this, Nuno is on borrowed time

    @Dannyb3216:
    Uninspiring.
    Negative.
    Cowardly.
    No drive for success.
    Tactically inept.
    Absolute fraud.
    Thats nuno in a nutshell.
And he is suppose to be the manager to take us back up 🤣🤣.
He’s a failure and a fraud and should have gone end off last season.
Absalute shambles of a club atm

@MartCAFC45: All you arrogant wet shammers giving it “it’s just Charlton“. Welcome to the championship. You’ll still win league but give it some respect

@HammerzOliver: Fucking sack Nuno now. No respect for kreinsky anymore for wanting to keep the terrorist.

@claretdeafo: Awful team. Awful manager. Awful academy. I genuinely see no way this team comes back up. West Ham as a club are spiraling to an awful awful situation

@WestHamFR_: Only one guy everyone knows he can’t shoot, everyone… and..
