The important development is not Yoenli becoming the mandatory challenger. WBO president Gustavo Olivieri publicly confirmed that status on August 23, stating that Bentley would receive one voluntary defense before facing the Cuban. Yoenli’s appeal changes that arrangement. The WBO now intends to send Bentley directly into the mandatory defense because the obligation dates back to Janibek’s reign. Vacating the championship and elevating Bentley did not erase it.

That distinction was lost in BoxingScene’s headline, which presents Hernandez’s mandatory position as something new. The exclusive portion is that his appeal appears to have eliminated the voluntary defense previously promised to Bentley.

Bentley has a strong commercial reason to resist. Yoenli is a dangerous challenger with little recognition among British audiences. Domestic fights against Liam Smith or Chris Eubank Jr. would bring greater attention and substantially more money without forcing him to fight outside Britain.

Promotional control may become the next dispute. Bentley fights under Frank Warren and Queensberry, while Hernandez is represented by PBC. Unless the two sides negotiate a deal, the case will likely reach a purse bid, with each promoter trying to stage the fight on favorable ground. Queensberry has more incentive to protect an existing champion, but PBC invested in Hernandez’s climb and will not want him traveling to London without suitable terms.

The matchup itself presents serious danger for both men. Hernandez’s counterpunching and amateur pedigree give him the technical advantage at long range, although Francisco Daniel Veron showed that sustained pressure can force him into uncomfortable exchanges. Bentley carries greater raw power inside the pocket and cannot afford to follow the Cuban around waiting for one clean shot.

To control the fight, Hernandez must maintain a measured distance, punish Bentley’s entries, and avoid spending long periods behind his guard. Cutting off the ring and attacking the body would allow Bentley to create a physical contest before the challenger settles into his preferred rhythm.

The winner would become one of the central figures in a reshaped middleweight division alongside WBC champion Carlos Adames and WBA titleholder Erislandy Lara. For Bentley, however, the immediate issue is retaining the belt before receiving the profitable defense his team expected.

No negotiating period, purse bid, or fight deadline has been established. Until the WBO issues its written ruling, Bentley’s voluntary defense is not officially dead. The information nevertheless indicates that Hernandez has won the first and perhaps most important battle outside the ring.
