Surprising news from yesterday’s final press conference for the Spence-Tszyu PBC pay-per-view event being held this Saturday, July 25, at the Afterpay Arena in Sydney, Australia, is that the scheduled bout between two-division champion Stephen Fulton Jr. and two-time world title challenger Liam Wilson will now be contested at a catchweight of 133 lbs. and is no longer a WBA eliminator.

Fulton-Wilson was announced earlier this week as having been elevated to co-main event status when original co-main participant Jermall Charlo’s issues obtaining a visa forced the cancellation of his bout against Koen Mazoudier. The fight was also changed to a 12-round WBA world title eliminator, with the winner earning the right to challenge WBA 130lbs champion, Anthony Cacace.

Speaking at the conference held at the 24/7 Sports Bar in Sydney, No Limit Co-founder and CEO George Rose, whose company is co-presenting the event, along with Man Down Promotions, and TGB Promotions under the banner of Premier Boxing Champions, made the official announcement that Fulton’s team had requested and been granted the late change.

“Look, this fight will now take place at 133lbs,” said Rose. “When I approached Team Wilson, they didn’t care, they were ready. They don’t care what weight it’s at; they want this fight to happen. I’m really excited about that, it speaks volumes about the man Liam is, he’s traveled into other people’s back yards to fight for world titles, had odds against him multiple times … when he’s ready and has that chip on his shoulder, he comes out and performs.”

Fulton, 23-2 (8 KOs), had alluded to weight problems during his grand arrival on Tuesday in Sydney (Monday night in North America). The buzz around the issue grew louder when the former unified super bantamweight champion was the only fighter to miss Thursday’s open workout for the press.

This is the second consecutive time Fulton has failed to make 130lbs for a fight. In his most recent fight, December 2025, Fulton weighed in two pounds over the limit to face WBC junior-lightweight champ O’Shaquie Foster, a fight he lost by unanimous decision.

Fulton, who told The Sporting News Australia he would “most likely” campaign as a lightweight moving forward, says he had previously given Wilson’s team a warning about his weight difficulty.

“I mentioned something about it, a ‘behind the doors’ type of thing. It was (an official request), but I had to make the weight, no matter what. (In response promoters told him) ‘Try to make the weight.’ And that’s what I’m doing, and that’s what I did. That’s why I didn’t come yesterday ’cause I’m sitting here trying to make the weight. I’d rather miss a media workout rather than not fighting. I’m trying to save the card and my slot, so that’s why I didn’t show up yesterday.”

To his credit, Wilson, 18-3 (10 KOs), says he’s not upset about Fulton’s late change in weight, no matter his motivations, and says to add a victory over Fulton to his resume, “means everything,” to him.

“I only worry about what happens on my side of the fence, what’s happens on his side is up to him… I’ve fought guys like him before. They’ve come in heavy. They don’t work that hard, or they think they have an advantage over you. Whatever it may be… if he needs to be a better version of himself coming in heavy, so be it…

“If anything, it’s kind of relieving, less weight to lose,” admitted Wilson. “I’m a professional. 130 was the weight limit and I was prepared to make that weight… (but) less weight to lose is better for me… I mean, the extra weight is gonna do me a favor (too). It might do him a favor as well, but I’m a big super featherweight as it is, so to have a bit of leeway there… he did me a favor as well.”
