Staying at 154 pounds offers little upside. Defending his WBC interim belt never brought Ortiz closer to full champion status, nor did it deliver fights against Jaron Ennis, Sebastian Fundora or Xander Zayas. A prolonged promotional dispute with Golden Boy consumed the first half of 2026 before their July settlement, but division gridlock played an equal role in the delay.

Middleweight at least gives Ortiz several opponents people recognize.

Charlo is the biggest name on the list, but no one knows what he has left. He has fought once since May 2022, and another long layoff will not help him against a relentless pressure fighter like Ortiz.

Lara holds the WBA belt, giving Ortiz an immediate opportunity to gain championship legitimacy at middleweight. The Cuban relies on superb skill, yet at 43, his legs no longer provide the evasive movement of his prime.

Tszyu guarantees heavy exchanges between two aggressive punchers. Stoppage losses to Fundora and Bakhram Murtazaliev created serious questions about the Australian’s punch resistance, making Ortiz an especially punishing opponent for him.

Adames presents the hardest test among the four. The Dominican brings natural middleweight size, proven durability and heavy power inside the pocket. Defeating Adames would establish Vergil Jr. as a serious force at 160, rather than merely a junior middleweight chasing aging names.

Ortiz Jr. also has the dangerous alternative of facing Yoenlis Hernandez. The two-time Cuban amateur world champion possesses tremendous physical strength, steady pressure and hurtful combination punching. Hernandez lacks Charlo’s fame and Lara’s belt, but he provides a true reading of how Vergil Jr. handles a young, full-sized middleweight.

Taking real danger early makes sense. Vergil Jr. carried knockout power from 147 to 154, yet genuine middleweights absorb heavy shots differently and fire back with greater strength. A fight with Hernandez would reveal if Ortiz Jr. possesses the power and durability to compete with the sharks at 160 before more of his prime years disappear.

If the strength does not translate, Ortiz Jr. can return to 154. The same gridlock will still be waiting for him there. At least he will know that remaining in the division represents necessity rather than wasted opportunity.
