Netflix signed up for an international event driven by two famous British heavyweights and a rivalry years in the making. Its return comes through worldwide viewing, subscriber activity and interest beyond boxing’s regular audience, not individual pay-per-view sales alone. Remove Joshua, and that cultural event becomes a standard Fury broadcast against an unfamiliar opponent. Refusing to name either alternative also makes Brown’s announcement sound like pressure on Joshua’s side.

Fury’s camp is publicly presenting New York as a plan that can continue without him, but Brown still expects the original fight to be completed. Until Netflix confirms its involvement with another opponent, the alternatives provide Fury’s team with negotiating leverage more than certainty.

Netflix Faces A Difficult Replacement Decision

The available options leave Fury’s side trapped between commercial value and competitive danger. A soft opponent may not give Netflix enough reason to retain the date, venue and promotional budget. Madison Square Garden also becomes harder to fill once Joshua’s name is removed.

Selecting a leading heavyweight brings a different risk. Fury struggled badly against boxing newcomer Francis Ngannou before losing consecutive fights to Oleksandr Usyk. He looked heavy and slow in the second Usyk fight, with his movement and timing far removed from the fighter who controlled the heavyweight division earlier in his career.

Since then, Fury has beaten Arslanbek Makhmudov by a wide decision and stopped 46-year-old Mariusz Wach after seven rounds. Neither result proved that he is ready to defeat one of the division’s leading fighters. Makhmudov had already been stopped by Agit Kabayel and Guido Vianello, while Wach had lost 12 of his previous 18 fights. The last opponent Fury looked good against at championship level was Derek Chisora in December 2022, almost four years ago. Comfortable wins over carefully selected opposition do not erase what happened against Ngannou and Usyk.

Losing in November would damage the Joshua fight far more than another postponement. Yet selecting an opponent who offers little resistance may leave Netflix paying heavily for another tune-up.

Brown’s announcement shows that Fury’s camp has prepared for the Joshua negotiations to fail. It provides no assurance that Netflix will support the substitute plan or Madison Square Garden will remain the venue. Having two names available is the easy part. Finding someone credible enough for Netflix, manageable enough for Fury, and marketable enough for New York is the real difficulty.
