Tim Bradley sums up Floyd Schofield’s chances of beating Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis

If Gervonta Davis wishes to regain his status as WBA lightweight world champion, he must face undefeated 21-year-old Floyd Schofield, and now two-division conqueror Tim Bradley has shared his thoughts on that potential bout.

Davis was downgraded to the WBA’s lightweight ‘champion-in-recess’ back in January, after external issues kept him out of the ring, with Schofield initially expected to take on Lucas Bahdi in a clash for the full vacant title.

After a prolonged delay in ordering that bout, the WBA have now mandated a bout between Schofield and Davis, as the latter seeks to end of what has already become a 15-month spell of inactivity.

On top of that fight, ‘Tank’ Davis has also been linked to a rematch with Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, as well as a long-awaited clash with Vasyl Lomachenko, who recently announced that he would be coming out of retirement.

Should Davis attempt to reclaim the WBA lightweight throne and agree to take on ‘Kid Austin’, Bradley warned that the youngster ‘can easily become a problem’ and must be taken seriously, on his YouTube channel.

“The first thing to come to my mind is, is Floyd Schofield a tune-up? I don’t think he is. I think that he is young and I do think that he does make mistakes, which create openings, but the dude has got pop and the dude is explosive. That young man is explosive, very explosive.

“I don’t think that it is a safe fight, not out of the gate, not when you have been out of the ring as long as Tank, I don’t. I don’t see it, not at all. The longer that Floyd Schofield is able to be in that gym, perfecting his craft, he can easily become a problem.

“A lot of y’all think that fighting is the most important thing, ‘he gotta stay busy!’. Yeah, you are right, he has got to stay busy, he has got to stay busy in the gym, working.”

Although, despite recent rumours, Bradley then went on to declare that he does not believe Davis will accept that fight for his comeback.

“I just think that the fight is a little bit ‘not yet’ for Tank. Not right out of the gate. However, everybody can have their opinion, that is what I think about it. I personally don’t think that the fight is going to happen, I think that Tank is going to go a different route when he decides to return.”

The respective teams of Davis and Schofield have until Monday, June 22, to agree terms, with the WBA set to proceed with a purse bid if no agreement is reached within that negotiation window.
