Thurman Unsure If Benn Has The Skill To Beat Garcia

“Yeah, it’s interesting. I still don’t know what to think too much about Conor Benn. You know, he reminds me of like just those guys at the gym that are a little bit like bodybuilder boxers. You know, like they’re just shredded. They train hard, they got the physique, and they’re rough and tough, but where exactly is his IQ? Where’s the skills? Where’s the technique?” Thurman told Fight Hub TV.

Garcia gives Benn an opportunity to answer those questions. Benn can apply relentless pressure, throw with power and force grueling exchanges, but Ryan possesses the faster hands and sharp counterpunching to punish aggressive entries.

Thurman isn’t dismissing Benn’s chances. He compared that raw style to dealing with a charging rhino, pointing out that pure force remains dangerous regardless of technical shortcomings.

“It’s not that it’s a guaranteed loss for a fighter of that type of caliber. It’s not a guaranteed loss, but at the highest level, you will run into skillful opposition,” Thurman said.

Ryan provides exactly that test.

Benn’s pressure gives him a route to making Garcia uncomfortable, particularly if he can trap the champion on the inside rather than allowing Ryan to operate at his preferred range. The danger comes while crossing that distance, where Garcia’s speed and counterpunching can make Benn pay for reckless attacks.
