Chelsea have identified the man they want to replace Enzo Fernandez in their midfielder, according to Simon Phillips.

It was confirmed this week that Elliot Anderson would be joining Man City for a monster fee. That deal has been in the pipeline for a while, so despite the midfielder’s massive talent, Chelsea never really got into the race.

Instead they’ve been focused on other options as potential Enzo Fernandez replacements. Our writer Simon Phillips has a report on his website which claims there is one target the Blues want above all others – and that desire is partly coming from Xabi Alonso.

“Adam Wharton is who Chelsea want to replace Fernandez, and he is also the player that Xabi Alonso wants to sign in the heart of his new look Chelsea team that he is looking to form,” Phillips wrote on his Substack.

He also noted that “talks are on”, but the Blues won’t get too advanced until a deal to sell Enzo is agreed. The fact that we’re in talks for Wharton’s Crystal Palace teammate Maxence Lacroix adds another interesting dimension to all of this.

    In other news…

Reece James has picked up an injury at the World Cup, and the blame has to fall on Thomas Tuchel for that.

The arrival of Marco Palestra at Chelsea is meaning some big questions for other players already in the squad, with sources speaking about one youngster in particular.
