Terence Crawford believes an unblemished record proves that a fighter defeated everyone placed before him. That sounds convincing until the opponents who never received the opportunity come into view.

“Only a losers would say having a 0 doesn’t mean anything. To a winner it means you beat everyone put in front of you,” Crawford posted on X.

Amino Boxing replied: “Boots was put in front of you. You tucked your tail and hauled ass. Guess thats the secret.”

Jaron Ennis was more than a hypothetical opponent at welterweight. The IBF installed Boots as interim champion and ordered Crawford to defend against him after the Errol Spence Jr. fight.

Crawford instead remained tied to a Spence rematch clause that never produced a second fight. The IBF stripped him in November 2023 and elevated Ennis. Crawford did not reject a signed Boots contract, but the sanctioning body presented a clear choice between retaining its belt against Ennis and following the Spence rematch route. Boots never received his shot.

The same pattern followed at 154. Crawford fought Israil Madrimov once and struggled with the Uzbek’s feints, movement and right hands. He won, but Madrimov forced him to calculate every attack and denied him the dominant performance many anticipated.

That should have opened a fascinating run against Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Sebastian Fundora. Ortiz would have applied sustained physical pressure. Fundora’s 6’5″ frame, long reach, and high output presented another difficult tactical puzzle. Neither fight happened. Crawford left junior middleweight after one appearance.

His leap to 168 brought the largest reward available. Canelo Alvarez was older, slow-footed, and increasingly reliant on isolated power punches. Crawford’s speed and counterpunching were ideally suited to exploit him, and the resulting win was historic.

But conquering one champion is not the same as ruling a division. Crawford retired without defending against Christian Mbilli, Diego Pacheco, Osleys Iglesias or any other natural super middleweight contender. He collected the championship and left before the division’s younger fighters received access to him.

Even Floyd Mayweather, whose business model Crawford resembles, spent years facing fighters across several generations. Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, Canelo and Manny Pacquiao all reached him.

Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler lost fights because they repeatedly faced elite opposition. Their defeats did not make them lesser champions. They proved that greatness involves accepting the possibility of failure.

Crawford’s 42-0 record confirms that nobody beat him. It does not confirm that every dangerous opponent was given the chance. Ennis, Ortiz, Fundora, and the leading fighters at 168 remain unanswered names behind that perfect number.
