The criticism may have touched a sensitive part of Crawford’s legacy. The 42-0 former undisputed champion retired after defeating Canelo Alvarez, yet he still felt motivated to answer criticism from a fighter he considers far beneath him. Crawford left boxing on top, but Ennis and Ortiz remain useful names for anyone trying to question his departure.

That dismissal reveals the calculation behind Crawford’s retirement. Ryan can generate enormous attention and a lucrative purse, but beating him would earn Crawford little credit from hard-core fans. Losing, or merely struggling with him, would damage the perfect ending created by the Canelo victory.

A fight with Ryan offers a circus-sized event without the historical value Crawford would receive from beating Ennis or Ortiz Jr. Crawford also comes from a boxing culture built around collecting titles and defeating champions. Garcia represents an era in which popularity, followers, and viral confrontations can create lucrative opportunities without the same traditional climb.

That cultural difference helps explain the contempt in Crawford’s response. He does not seem to view Ryan as a deserving challenger. He sees a social-media attraction trying to talk his way into the ring with a retired champion.

“Lol I just be waiting to see people energy when I see them. I am getting told old for all pencils🤣 Well see yall in Vegas next week,” said Crawford.

Ryan then answered with a vicious personal attack:

“You might be the actual crackhead – once again, I can smell desperation from you. You have to resort to lying on me to make a point; you are a cornball and a liar. Look around you, Bud; you got money now, but you are still a little lame f*** bc you got a shi**y ass attitude. No one gives a f*** about you bc you don’t give a f*** about anyone but yourself, WEIRDO. Go back to living under a rock; you are annoying and an arrogant WHORE,” Garcia posted on X.

A WBC welterweight title defense against Conor Benn awaits Ryan on September 12. Crawford has picked Benn to win, making his planned Vegas visit more than an innocent appearance.

    Crawford Creates a Fight-Week Distraction

Social-media battles have repeatedly pulled Ryan away from the immediate task. Benn brings physical strength, forward pressure, and the ability to force Garcia toward the ropes. The champion should be concentrating on controlling distance and stopping Benn from cutting off the ring, not wondering if Crawford will confront him during fight week.

Crawford might claim he is merely defending his reputation, but his actions directly aid Benn by rattling Garcia. Ryan talks tough into media microphones from a safe distance. Repeating those insults with Crawford standing directly in front of him requires an entirely different level of courage.

A post-Benn storyline may also be what Garcia is testing. If he wins, he can demand that Crawford come out of retirement. If he loses, the personal dispute gives him another lucrative direction and helps move the conversation away from the defeat.

Showing up in Las Vegas allows Crawford to remain at the center of boxing without risking a comeback. Floyd Mayweather followed a similar strategy after retiring, attending major fight weeks and trading words with active stars to keep his name in circulation.

He publicly dismisses Garcia as an unworthy opponent while gladly feeding the public drama. Crawford walked away from active competition, but he knows staying visible in front of the cameras keeps him at the center of the boxing world
