Oscar De La Hoya suggested Saturday that Floyd Schofield could pursue a fight against Lucas Bahdi rather than wait for a showdown with Gervonta Davis.
Although Davis and Schofield had been linked following the WBA’s lightweight title situation, Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya suggested on Saturday that Schofield may be better served pursuing a different route.
“I love the fight. I love the fight for Schofield, I love the fight for Gervonta. Gervonta is one of the best fighters out there today,” De La Hoya said during Golden Boy’s DAZN broadcast.
“But the fact of the matter is, Gervonta is a champion in recess. That’s exactly what the WBA has said. So what we feel is, let Schofield fight the next available top contender, who could be maybe Lucas Bahdi. That would be a terrific fight for the full world title.”
“Schofield will be a force to be reckoned with, a world champion, and maybe down the road, we can make that Gervonta fight happen,” said De La Hoya.
De La Hoya was also asked about Davis’ current situation outside the ring.
“(Tank) has to take care of his issues,” De La Hoya said. “I do wish him the best. I hope he does figure it out because we do miss him in the ring. I hope that one day we get Floyd Schofield with Gervonta Davis.”
The WBA ordered Davis and Schofield to begin negotiations earlier this month. De La Hoya’s comments on Saturday were the strongest indication yet that Schofield could move in a different direction.
Bahdi is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Ryan James Racaza in May. Schofield has not fought since his first-round knockout of Tevin Farmer in June 2025.
