Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has insisted “it’s not my job to say who we sign or if we have to sign someone” in this transfer window.

The Reds endured a disappointing campaign in 2025-26, finishing fifth in their Premier League title defence while failing to win any silverware.

Liverpool’s 60 points last season are the lowest by a side to finish fifth or higher in the Premier League since Tottenham in 2006-07 (also fifth with 60 points).

Indeed, it is the joint-lowest ever by a side to qualify for the Champions League via their league position in the competition, alongside the Reds themselves in 2003-04.

Liverpool have also undergone major changes ahead of the new season, with Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer, while Andoni Iraola has replaced Arne Slot at the helm.

The Reds have made two signings this summer in Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz, while they have been heavily linked with Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola.

Many fans are concerned about Liverpool’s lack of squad depth, but Szoboszlai claimed he would not get involved in the matter.

“It’s not my job to say who we have to sign or if we have to sign someone,” Szoboszlai said.

“But if the guys above and the manager decide to sign someone then we’ll be very happy and welcome them well.

“If they decide not to then we get on with it, and we have to do something special with this squad.”

One player who could receive more game time this season for Liverpool is 19-year-old Trey Nyoni, who has impressed in pre-season.

Szoboszlai has backed the teenager to do well at the club and believes the younger players may need to step up if more signings do not come through the door at Anfield.

“I knew always that Trey is a good player,” the Hungarian added.

“In training he has shown his quality many times. Also, when he had the chance to play in some cup games or even in the Premier League.

“The youngsters at the back also did very well both in the training sessions and the games. They are one of us. The squad is short so we need everybody.”
