Wojciech Szczesny revealed not winning the Premier League during his time with Arsenal is “still bugging me from the inside”.

The goalkeeper joined Arsenal as a teenager from Legia Warsaw in 2006 before making his first-team debut in the 2009-10 season.

He made 181 appearances for the Gunners and kept 69 clean sheets before his permanent exit in 2017, which came after a two-year loan spell with Roma.

Since January 2000, only Jens Lehmann (78) has kept more clean sheets for Arsenal than Szczesny, while the former Poland shot-stopper has made the most saves for the club in that time (476).

The 36-year-old won two FA Cups and one Community Shield during his time in north London, but failed to get his hands on the Premier League.

Arsenal led the league for the most part of the 2013-14 season, but were out of the title race before April as they eventually finished fourth, seven points behind eventual champions Manchester City.

“When I was there, we had one season when we were on top of the league for a very long time, and we lost in the end,” Szczesny, who was the joint-winner of the Golden Glove in 2013-14, told The Athletic.

“I felt we were the best team in the league. But we were a very young, inexperienced team, and in the end, when it mattered, we fell short.

“This isn’t just about winning the title as a group of players. This is about something that represents an area, represents values, represents people’s dreams.”

“It still hurts because it’s the one trophy that I haven’t won in professional football that I would have loved to win… winning the Premier League with Arsenal.

“It’s still bugging me from the inside, but as a fan I’m very happy about what happened this year.

“Arsenal is a place where I made my dream come true. Emotionally, it’s the maximum that I believe anybody can achieve: playing for the club of your dreams.

“I’ve achieved the dream. It’s the peak of your career. It’s a beautiful story, although I only won three trophies with Arsenal: two FA Cups and a Community Shield.

“It will probably always be the most beautiful part of my career. The one filled with the most passion. It was also the start of my career. I was very hungry, very determined to show people that I belong at that level.”
