Jack Wilshere says sorry for seeing red in Luton’s 2-1 defeat at Stevenage, which saw two ‘blatant’ refereeing errors, says Chris Powell.
The latter said he felt the first Stevenage goal should’ve been ruled out for a foul in the build-up and the second for offside.
Thursday’s result sees Stevenage up to 4th with 9 points from 6 games played, while Luton are 8th with 8 points, with this weekend’s games to play out.

Chris Powell said, as per The Lutonian:
“He [Wilshere] apologised to the staff and to the players. He’s an emotional, talented young manager and he’ll come again.
“It’s not easy. The pressure’s on, but he’ll learn, he’ll accept it and move on and carry on the way he has done since he walked through the door.
“He had to go in the dressing room. He was on the [phone] speaker. He had the earpiece with Tim [Corcoran – coach] and relayed stuff, and we were telling him stuff.
“Everyone in the whole stadium is expecting the referee to blow.
“I know you shouldn’t stop, I get that. It’s as blatant as that. You’re hoping that the officials spot it and they work together and they make the correct decision. It’s quite clear what happened. You could see it live. You see the replays and it just confirmed what we saw.”
On the winner: “It’s clear offside. So they’ve scored two goals, they’ve won a game when actually they’ve had a helping hand.”
On the frustration from the away end: “Maybe they haven’t seen the replays. I get that. We understand emotions are always high in local derbies, whether it’s Stevenage or Watford for us. It’s frustrating.
“We understand the fans have paid their money and they have their right to voice their opinions. But when they look back on it, those two goals shouldn’t have stood. Simple as that.”
Stevenage’s Alex Revell said: “We’ve seen a game where two teams are trying to win, right? And and great battle. You know, they’re a really good team with really, really good players, but so are we. So are we. But we’ve got a group that work really hard, incredibly hard for each other. And just showed the grit, the determination, that that that will to win tonight. I just thought really stood out from our from our boys tonight and yeah, really really really pleased with the performance, really pleased with the result and thoroughly deserved.”
Asked if it was a slow start for you, he replied: “It was a slow start because they kicked the ball really well and and at times you have to figure out, you know, every game’s different. You have to figure out what how they’re building, what they’re doing, and certain things. And we had to do that as a team. We’re going to have to do that in games.
“So yeah, we had to figure out, well, once we figured it out and once we got and dealt with their press better, I thought that we, I saw our press, I thought that we won it. We drove forward. The goal comes from that whether a foul or not, it’s a fantastic goal because again, we’re showing how quickly these players can learn with certain instances, you know, now. And, yeah, the outcome was was really pleasing, and then after that goal, I thought it was us.
“I thought we then started to step on and I thought we show real aggression, real front foot, you know and yeah, I just I felt from that moment when we went two and up obviously it also becomes that nerviness of of wanting to win the game and they scored a goal, you know, out of nothing really.
“And then you know those last seven minutes were the longest seven minutes I think we’ve ever experienced. But yeah, really pleased and everyone would be really proud of of their what they what they did tonight.”
