Skye Nicolson, the popular women’s WBC junior featherweight champion from Australia, has sustained an undisclosed injury that will force her off her Most Valuable Promotions’ debut card August 29 in England, the promotion announced Wednesday.
A “devastated” Nicolson, 16-1 (3 KOs), said in a prepared statement that her title defense versus Miyo Yoshida, 19-5 (1 KO), will be rescheduled in the near future.
She’s linked to Jake Paul’s MVP as part of the new strategic alliance with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.
“I’d like to sincerely apologize to Miyo Yoshida and her team for this delay. I have nothing but respect for Miyo and I’m looking forward to finally sharing the ring with her before the end of the year,” Nicolson said.
“The positive news is that while I’m recovering, I’ll be heading to Orlando this weekend for the MVPW-05 event, where I’m excited to support my fellow Australian world champions [including Cherneka Johnson] and many other incredible athletes. A new date for my fight with Yoshida will be locked in very soon, and I can’t wait to get back in the gym, back to full health, and back doing what I love.”
The August 29 card at BP Pulse Live in Birmingham on ESPN+ and Sky Sports, still features a 154lbs unification between Mikaela Mayer and Chantelle Cameron, WBO lightweight champion Caroline Dubois versus Amelia Moore, featherweights Reina Tellez versus Jessica Barry and a super-lightweight bout between Terri Harper and Miranda Reyes.
England junior featherweight Tysie Gallagher, 10-2, replaces Nicolson on the main card with an opponent yet to be named.
The preliminary undercard will include India’s Neeray Goyat, 20-4-2 (9 KOs) vs. Germany’s Yessin Koulai, 8-1 (3KOs).
