Serie A side break off transfer talks just as Chelsea seemed close

Trevoh Chalobah’s move to Como has collapsed, and Simon Phillips is now saying a deal is unlikely, after all that.

At one point, on Saturday, it looked like the deal for Chelsea to sell Trevoh Chalobah to Como was all but done. After an already protracted negotiation, the Italians were offering €25m and €5m in bonuses. That was close enough to Chelsea’s asking price that we assumed a deal would be done before long.

Instead, Chelsea have kept holding out for a deal closer to €40m, and Como have now “walked away” from negotiations.

Our writer Simon Philips has the update today, post a hectic weekend. He says that while a move is not off the table, it now looks “very unlikely,” quite the change from a week ago.

Chalobah himself wants to go to Como, but is relaxed because he has “serious interest” from a “number of other Premier League and European clubs.”

The question is – will any of them pay the €40m we want? Clearly our sporting directors are confident in getting a deal done, or they wouldn’t be driving such a hard bargain. They think their valuation is “more than fair” for a 27 year old England international.

    In other news…

Xabi Alonso couldn’t confirm the signing of Maxence Lacroix in his press conference today – but he certainly didn’t deny it either.

Morgan Rogers was another major subject touched on in the press conference, and Alonso had a lot to say about the positions he could use the attacker in.
