Sami Zayn is still Undisputed WWE Champion with a victory over Kevin Owens, thanks to plenty of interference, in the main event of “WWE SmackDown.” Zayn had not just Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae to thank, but CM Punk, as well.
It was the first time outside of “WWE NXT” that Zayn and Owens had gone one-on-one for a top title. Owens immediately took it to Zayn to start off the match, and sent him out of the ring. Owens nearly chopped the champion into the laps of fans over the barricade.
Zayn tried to battle back with DDT in the ring. He got to the top turnbuckle, but Owens got on his feet and the pair traded strikes, and Zayn raked Owens’ eyes. Zayn leapt over his challenger, but walked into a superkick.
Owens hit Zayn with two running sentons and a cannonball in the corner. He paid homage to John Cena with the Attitude Adjustment, but Zayn kicked out. Zayn dodged the pop-up power bomb, then a stunner to hit a Blue Thunder Bomb. The pair met on the top turnbuckle once again, and Owens hit Zayn with the swanton.
Gargano ran down to distract the referee. LeRae hit a tornado DDT to Owens, allowing for Zayn to hit the Helluva Kick. After Owens kicked out, he looked for a second, but Owens hit the power bomb, then the stunner. Gargano put Zayn’s foot on the bottom rope. Owens attacked Gargano, then sent Zayn through the commentary desk and got him back in the ring.
While the referee was distracted by LeRae, Punk appeared and nailed Owens with the title. Zayn took out the former champion and crawled over to cover Owens. Owens didn’t kick out in time, but the referee appeared confused about making the count. Zayn hit another Helluva Kick to pin Owens for the win. After the match, Punk hit both men with a GTS to end the show.
