Salford’s Peter Cklamovski reacts after a 1-0 defeat to Chesterfield extends their winless start to the 2026/27 season.

Chesterfield were the better team in the end, and defended well to keep a clean-sheet and pick up their first victory of the season.

The Ammies, who came into this season as favourites for promotion from League Two, put on pressure and dominated possession, their chances blocked, and struck the woodwork twice.

    SHORTENED HIGHLIGHTS:

    EXTENDED HIGHLIGHTS:

Salford’s Peter Cklamovski said, as per the club website: “We’re disappointed not to get the result, it’s a harsh lesson that we can’t give a head start to the opponent like that.

“A goal in the first two minutes really took the wind out of our sails for the first part of the first half, but again you see the commitment and desire of the players to push through.

“We had a few chances to score a couple of goals, we hit the post twice, so it’s a disappointing result for us not to give three points to the fans and kickstart our season but it’s a little bit of a medicine we have to take to grow from.

“The goals will come it’s one of those things where we need to sharpen up areas of our game and focus on that.

“We need this because you’re not going to go through a season and get on a wave and go without bumps, and this is a setback that we’ll absorb and bounce back from, and it’ll make us a stronger team, it’ll make us a smarter team.”

Chesterfield’s assistant manager Danny Webb said: “Listen, I think the gaffer [Paul Cook] has got a lot of experience as we have as coaches of of trying to see games out and there’s always going to be things that you might not have seen before and and today was the right the right call obviously in in hindsight cuz it worked and that’s the great thing about coaching. You look back and it’s good decision if it works your way.

“But I thought the boys were were colossus at times. I think they’ve uh they’ve been really good all pre-season. a lot of new lads together and I think that obviously went to the gaffer for a long time. I know that after Saturday it’s the first game of the season. He felt very low and I thought what was good today you saw the the positive of our traveling supporters was excellent to to get behind us and uh it’s only one week in football. It’s a long time.

“So yeah, we’re a bit disappointed on Monday coming in as a bit of a down feel about the whole club which shouldn’t be the case because we’ve only played one game and you saw today like I say that the reaction of our supporters at the end was fantastic. Shows what it means to them. We have a really good time didn’t we at Salford over the years but they’re a good team. We haven’t got kicking just yet, but they’re a very good team.

“But when it comes to the end, their game plan sort of went out the window and they’re loading the box and and I’ve always said to you, Phil, that’s over to the players. It’s over to the players to organise and mark people and put your body on the line. And I think all a bit nervous when Stirky hit his own post with a head angle He was laughing the whole time. That’s a character. He was laughing as he did. I thought, let’s not laugh at the game’s finished.

“But no, boys deserve a lot of credit today Because that was a you know, that was a real colossus performance in a lot of ways.

Here’s how fans reacted while Salford’s Peter Cklamovski spoke of being disappointed after defeat to Chesterfield extends a winless start for the Ammies…

James Dyer: Sacking Robbo working out well aye

Alan Culshaw: The usual problem when a team has been almost completely changed and it’ll take months to sort out. Seen it before. Too many changes in players/Staff and knowing your best set up. I’ll give it till November before i press the panic button.

Chris Cooper: The problem is that we are miles off. By the time we learn and bounce back, the league will be gone and we’re in the ‘catch-up saloon’ again.

Gary Roberts: Chris Cooper don’t understand the appointment of him. No experience with English football let alone L2. Have suspicion he could be gone by Xmas at the rate we’re going

Chris Cooper: Gary Roberts The CEO saw him and liked him. I don’t think they were mates. The CEO admired his work. He was probably itching to get rid of KR.

Roy Weston: As a coach try to install some passion into the players instead of just standing there with your hands in your pockets for 90 mins. Even when you had chance to get the players together due to an injury you still stood away from the players reminds me of a previous manager (Neil Wood)

Paul Handley: ..completely aside from everything else..does anyone know accurately, whether Karl Robinson wished to leave or was he forced out??.. if forced out.. truly WRONG.. after coming within one point of gaining promotion last campaign.

Bob Banks: While class of 92 make decisions on who stays at the club get used to results like today

Brad Overend: The grass isn’t always greener swapping managers every couple of seasons,Karl was a better manager and doing a fantastic job

Damian Byrne: Generic throwaway statements that mean very little. The team lacks a cutting edge up top and is far too easy to play against. First half the Chesterfield midfield had the freedom of Salford to play. Was lucky to be 1-0. Lots of decent players in there but looks a mess at the moment.

A much stronger second half from Salford. Hitting the post twice, but things just seem a bit too desperate at times. Again, similar to the opening weekend, this team needs time to gel and the potential is there. A tough start, but there’s so much more to come. UTA 🧡 pic.twitter.com/MZ4gM4vcXz

Really disappointed not to have seen more goals in this one. Good pressing from Chesterfield throughout but with only the early winner to show for it. Salford hit the post twice but just couldn’t find enough to get back into the game. https://t.co/2KGrfvGRPC
